MISSOULA, Mont. -- A song honoring veterans will open the Operation Homecoming USA concert in Branson, Mo., next month.

...Carlson said the inspiration for her song was her brother, Gary, a Vietnam veteran now suffering a debilitating illness contracted during his tour of duty.

Operation Homecoming USA, which will be held June 13-19, also plans to feature performances by the Beach Boys, the Fifth Dimension, the Supremes and the Oak Ridge Boys. The Doobie Brothers, Creedence Clearwater Revisited and Tony Orlando also are to perform, Carlson said.

"It's the national homecoming we never gave our Vietnam vets," she said.

Maybe they came around after they stopped hanging out with the Doobie Brothers! ;-)

As a viet vet who did two tours, I'm getting tired of this we never welcomed them home crap.

When I came back in 69, I was treated with respect and dignity by everyone I met. The only problem I had was going into a neighborhood bar in uniform, people would not stop buying me drinks.

This I was spat upon when I came home is just more playing victim crap.

Tie a yellow ribbon on the old oak tree.

Tony Orlando and Dawn are the parents of the ribbon magnet industry. First started during Jimmy Carter's inglorious reaming from the Ayatolla Kokamamy. I'm old enough to remember there were yellow ribbons everywhere for the US embassy personell being held hostage. My favorite currently is the 'Get'er Done' yellow ribbon-magnet I saw affixed next to a Christian Fish on the back of an SUV driven by an attractive lady who passed me. But I haven't been able to find it anywhere on the internet. Any leads?

You were obviously the exception due to your charm and good humor.

Who'll Stop the Rain? John Fogerty needs the bread.

Wow!! Ditch the Beach Boys, and you've got a fabulous lineup!!

I like to chew my bubblegum, not listen to it.

I would bet it is CCR without John Fogerty.

I never did get their music. Must be me, 'cause I seem to be the only one. I'd much rather listen to Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sam Cook, old Stones, old Floyd, The Who, The Doors, et cetera...

I really enjoy the beginning of your list (early 60s), but not so much into the druggie music (late 60s).

Yes, I'm generalizing, and there certainly are exceptions.

Pet Sounds is an exceptional album, not at all like the Beach music contained in their other works. I have the lp in Mono sound...

One of the best albums ever recorded, IMHO.

That's the sound that I just can't seem to warm up to. I have a friend who is a big BB fan. I'll see if I can borrow Pet Sounds from him (assuming he has it). Always willing to broaden my horizons. ;o)
