Violence Policy Center Hails New York State Assembly's Passage of 50 Caliber Sniper Rifle Ban

Washington, DC—The Violence Policy Center (VPC) today applauded the New York State Assembly for voting last night to ban 50 caliber sniper rifles. The measure must now go to the New York State Senate. The legislative effort was spearheaded by New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV), the state's leading gun violence prevention organization.

The VPC has long advocated for a ban on the sale and possession of 50 caliber sniper rifles and was the first organization in the country to alert the American public to the dangers posed by these weapons with its landmark 2001 study, Voting From the Rooftops: How the Gun Industry Armed Osama bin Laden, Other Foreign and Domestic Terrorists, and Common Criminals With 50 Caliber Sniper Rifles. Subsequent VPC studies have exposed the ability of these rifles to attack bulk fuel tanks and other high-value targets from a distance, as well as their ability to destroy commercial aircraft. [Follow this link for more information on the threat posed by 50 caliber sniper rifles, including their use in crime.] In September 2004 California became the first state in the nation to ban the weapons. Federal legislation to restrict their availability has been introduced in the U.S. House and Senate.

VPC Senior Policy Analyst Tom Diaz, author of the VPC studies, states, "Last night's action by the New York State Assembly sends a strong message to New York State residents and citizens across the country that these weapons of war must be banned. Fifty caliber rifles, used by our troops in Iraq and around the world, can penetrate armor plating and are accurate to over a mile, yet they are as easy to buy as a hunting rifle, and less restricted than handguns."

Why can they ban such dangerous dolts as VPC members?

Thank God. Now New York can get some relief from all those 50-cal shootings that have been taking place.

Violence Policy Center

Their name is ironic, as the policies they promote will actually increase violence if implemented.

With the counterrevolutionaries disarmed, the Great Leader surveyed his empire, and was pleased.

Well, how long do you think it will take for Ronnie Barrett to boycott that state? I bet they start screaming when their cops feel a need for such a rifle and Barrett tells them to take a hike.

Yep....but also has a lot of money and media connections. Josh Sugarmann and Tom Diaz.

It isn't really all that important, but how the heck is someone supposed to take down an airplane with an unguided projectile? You have to estimate the mid-to-high altitude air currents and pressure and guess the path of the aircraft moving at maybe 600 km/h.

People going out of their way to find things to be afraid of.

That one open letter is one of my all time favorites.

I just hope I can afford one before they are banned by the feds.

I think Barrett, Cobb, Serbu were swamped with orders from CA folks when their ban was passed.

The VPC don't realize it but they are helping to proliferate these rifles :-)

If the RINOs cave and give in to some kind of nation wide .50BMG ban I'll be on the phone with a sales person at Barrett to see if I can buy 1 or 2 stripped receivers for their M82A1 rifle. Then build them up as I get more money.

There was a major hatchet piece on this subject on "60 Minutes" last Sunday. What Diaz wound up claiming is that planes parked, taxiing, or on a take-off roll are at risk, then he switched to talking about the danger to propane and oil tanks.

At 33.8 pounds and 57 inches long the Barrett .50 caliber rifle is easy to conceal and a dream to carry. At $7,775 it is also easy on the wallet. Of course, the small signature makes the .50 BMG an ideal round for unobserved activity. The one mile range is ideal in crowded urban settings. No wonder .50 caliber rifles had become a growing problem in New York. (/sarcasm)

Ever since I got my concealed carry permit, I've been just waiting for someone to cut me off in traffic so I can go postal on them with my concealed .50 BMG. (/sarcasm)

I hope to buy one of the less expensive ones here in the near future.

The funny thing is I probably would have never considered adding one to my collection if not for the idiots at Brady/VPC.

Well, I did fire one recently which kinda sealed the deal ;-)

If you think that is expensive, just wait until you try to buy a conceal carry holster for that thing.(Whew!)
