In addition to what you've already been told about "Deep Throat," I'll point out that one of the WaPo editors referred to DT as "Woodstein's garage freak," because Woodward--half of the team nicknamed "Woodstein"--was instructed to switch cabs on the way to a dark parking garage where he would meet with DT. It was so over-the-top wierd, I've been willing to suspect DT was Al Haig...he always took himself far too seriously.

Who will ever forget Al Haig telling the world that he was "in charge". Funny, I can visualize him doing this but can't remember why.
