Spokane Mayor Defends Self on 'Today' Show

Spokane -- Embattled Mayor Jim West, accused of past sexual misconduct and using his office for personal gain, maintained his innocence in an appearance on NBC's "Today" show Tuesday.

"I haven't misused my office for personal gain. I haven't done anything illegal," he said.

A series of Spokesman-Review articles beginning May 5 included accusations the 55-year-old West had molested two boys while he was a Spokane County sheriff's deputy in the mid-1970s and of more recently abusing the office of mayor to solicit sex from young men.

West, a Republican former state Senate majority leader and gay rights opponent, has repeatedly denied the abuse accusations as "flat lies." The statute of limitations has expired on the molestation claims.

Asked on the "Today" show how he would describe himself, West said, "You know .. bisexual, gay. After my marriage broke up about nine years ago, I did have intimate relationships with both men and women, ... I'm not going to go into my private life on national TV."

He doesn't have to. Nothing more to say than that. What he just said sums it up pretty well.

He'll be forced out, I'm sure. Once someone gets this kind of cloud over them, their done.

I did like what he said in response to Matt's question, if he felt like a hypocrite being bi/gay and voting against gay rights. All politicians could learn from his answer.

What was his answer?

BTW, notice how they point out he's a Republican. If he were a Dem it would have been a tiny item in the last sentence of the article.

That he was elected to represent the wishes of his constituents. (paraphrasing)
Oh yes, if Katie had done the interview Republican would have been squeezed in about 100 times.

Hmmm, that's one way to put it, I guess.

LOL. But he could "move west," west to Seattle, and be accepted in a number of roles there. He could even run for Mayor this year as a gay, er bi, er whatever in that city and get elected given the politics in the metro sex city.

You just did, and its revolting. I think people like him are the worst, they are the ones that bring the gay diseases into the heterosexual community.

That he was elected to represent the wishes of his constituents.

So, if a majority of Americans want President Bush to immediately withdraw all troops from Iraq, he should, because he was elected to represent the wishes of his constituents?

If the same percentage of constituents that support Wests position on gay "rights", did not support Bush's position on the war, he would never have been re-elected.

So, if a majority of Americans want President Bush to immediately withdraw all troops from Iraq,...

Apples and oranges. One has to do with special rights for gays the other has to do with what the president was elected to do...protect the country.

Jim West gay?

I always knew Artemus was really a girls name, and Jim liked his satin vests tight across the chest, and they lived together in a sleeper car on a private Pullman, but GAY?

Glad I threw out the TV years ago.
