Speeding motorists thumb noses at radar

Dubai: Traffic Department officers in Dubai are grappling with an unexpected problem - speeding motorists making indecent gestures to radar cameras.

A source from the Radar Department at Dubai Traffic Police said such incidents were quite common and mainly involved young men, but sometimes women as well.

"A few days ago, I saw the radar picture of a young man naked and driving at very high speed. This picture was very embarrassing, and it was clear the young man had done it on purpose. He did not even bother to hide the number plate of his car.

"Another picture was of a woman who showed her breast to the radar while she was speeding. She covered her car number plate. I hope she gets punished," he said.

The source said it was obvious these young men and women were looking for attention.

"When the young man was summoned to the traffic police to discuss the incident he showed no regret and was very rude. The Radar Department made this young man sign an undertaking pledging he would not repeat this offence.

"Also we see the pictures of many young men and women showing their fingers," he said.

The source added not all the behaviour was embarrassing, some were entertaining. "I saw a picture of two young UAE national men saluting the radar camera."

A top official at Dubai Traffic Police Department denied seeing such pictures.

"If this is true, then Dubai Traffic Police Department will not only make them sign an undertaking not to repeat it, but will also send them to the Public Prosecution department for punishment," he said.

See what happens when you let them drive.

I would rather that they hit the traffic cameras with rocks or other heavy objects to disable them. Regularly. And here in America, too.

Speed limit? What speed limit? Don't think they could compete with the freeway denizens here in California.

Don't bet the farm on your position. Think high dollar performance cars (Mercedes S600 being the slower ones) and long straight roads.

Add young male drivers and stand well clear of the roads.

Hah!! They can't keep up with some of the young women in their Mercedes (Porsche, Explorer, etc., etc.) SUV's. You get in their way, you get run over.

Reminds me of the autostrada (and to some extent the autobahn). Some of the vehicles that fly down those roads make an S-600 look like a pathetic joke ....think wickedly expensive and so fast they would strip the paint off a GTO (which is one of the reasons why the Italian cops got a Lamborhini Gallardo pursuit vehicle).

Or more. Google for what the Brits do to GATSOs speed trap cameras. http://www.speedcam.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index2.htm

Note that such suggestions are for entertainment value only. I would never suggest civil disobedience at that level.

Waaaay back, before LA's freeways were jammed 24 hours a day, the favorite sport was taking a mid-night romp in a Shelby Cobra. They look fast standing still, and ooohhh those curves.

You can never outrun police radios.
