Missouri State Trooper Shot Nine Times During Traffic Stop

The Associated Press
Published: May 30, 2005

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A man who recently was fired from his job at an elementary school is accused of shooting a state highway patrol trooper nine times after a traffic stop.

Trooper Brandon Brashear, 27, of Grain Valley, remained hospitalized Monday in critical but stable condition.

Authorities said Brashear was shot by the suspect early Saturday as the trooper got out of his car. The suspect then chased him into the highway median, continuing to shoot him with a 9 mm assault rifle, police said.

Tommy R. Rollins Jr., 26, of Grandview, was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action and was being held without bond. He told reporters Sunday that he didn't mean to shoot Brashear.

"It was just temporary insanity. I wasn't even thinking when I did it," he said. "The society's what caused me to do what I did. Just look at the society we live in."

Jackson County Prosecutor Michael Sanders said Rollins' blame was misplaced.

"Mr. Rollins can try to blame anyone he wants to blame, but the reality is, society wasn't out there pulling that trigger," Sanders said.

The prosecutor did not elaborate further on Rollins' job woes.

Assault rifle? 9mm? Naww. Musta been a 9mm assault pistol :)

Remember that any weapon used in an illegal act is (as far as the media is concerned), an assualt XXXX, weather it's an "assault pistol," an "assault rifle," or whatever. These people aren't interesting in getting the details right, as long as the slant meets their political views.

BTW, there are a number of carbines out there that do fire 9mm. I believe that Savage makes one, and it uses S&W magazines. There's also the Colt 9mm version of the AR15, but I don't know if it's ever been offered in a semi-auto/civilian version. there are others that I've seen over the years, but I can't think of any right off hand.

Whine, whine, whine! I feel sorry for the police officer. Not this idiot. So he had a bad day. That doesn't give him the right to shoot a police officer.

"It was just temporary insanity. I wasn't even thinking when I did it," he said. "The society's what caused me to do what I did. Just look at the society we live in."

And a court jury of his peers should do the same, charged him for his insanity claiming society forced them to put him behind bars for life. Loser

There is no such thing as a 9-mm assault rifle. Submachine gun perhaps, but by definition, a 9 mm is not an assault caliber. Don't expect the media to appreciate the distinction.

"9 mm assault rifle" - Hmm, none comes to mind.

Assuming that the author doesn't know the difference between a semi-auto and a full-auto firearm (safe assumption, as they never do), and that they are wrongly calling a semi-auto an "assault rifle",then (Ruger makes one)

There are probably others, but this is the only one that I know of.

More like, the real story here is the continuing proliferation of unstable types(Nut cases) that know too well how to use and manipulate PC pacifist terminology in their favor.

Perp, "It's not my fault I pulled the trigger. I had a hang nail and a bad hair day. It's enough to drive anyone nuts!"

I'd say that this caliber modification would immediately become a SMG [if selective fire] due to the cartridge power limitations - try to squeeze more than 600 ft-lbs from a hot 9 mm round, even with a long barrel. Assault rifles give more than 1000 ft-lbs per progectile.
Besides, I could bet you a can of diet Coke that the perp was not using it as he would not be able to use it on a trooper from inside the car (too long and unwieldy)

It was a gun. It doesn't matter which gun was it. Guns are not bad, but some people are...

Per another article on this, link here, the trooper was wearing a vest. Referred article also described the weapon used as a 9mm handgun and not an "assault rifle".

Cool t-shirt.

When I was a kid I had a can that read "Can's don't litter people do." Objects don't move or activate on their own.

"So an idiot commits an assault with a rifle and it becomes an assault rifle. If he had perpetrated a rape with a banana would it become a rape banana? or just a ripe banana?"

Probably it would become a confiscated banana when the LEO on the scene pulled on his rubber gloves and picked it up for evidence.

Can't have an "assault by a fruit" without evidence, could we?

"It was just temporary insanity. I wasn't even thinking when I did it," he said. Not using your brain is irresponsible, and should be punishable crime in this case. The many murderers say that they are insane. And I believe it. They are. They should be tried and sentenced for that. We don't want insane people to be in our society.

Yeah, that was my question too. I can't believe someone could be shot 9 times with a rifle and survive, it would be tough to survive being shot with a 9mm handgun. TEC 9 maybe?

I hope they catch the gun that did this.

Oh, please, enough of this "blame the gun" stuff.

The man has already admitted that society is to blame. Now, let's all be grownups about this and go turn ourselves in for leading him to do this, ok??

"The society's what caused me to do what I did. Just look at the society we live in."

Society is merely the product of billions of individual choices, and he made his choice. He might as well claim his cat told him to do it.

"many murderers say that they are insane."
Well, to prevent bogus and malingering insanity claims, the judge should order the perp's skull to be cracked (the court bailiff might do it), the hood lifted and the engine compartment examined by the experts in detail - right there in the courtroom. Somehow I think that the perp would immediately plead complete sanity.

"Look for every story with a firearm involved to contain the term "assault" in the future."

I just heard on Fox News no less the story about the family on the farm all getting shot. The reporter said the 18 yo who just graduated from high school used a "22 caliber shotgun". And you think a "9mm assault rifle" is odd???
