Raising it more than neighboring states could have a net decrease in revenue result, because jobs and other retail sales taxes will be lost.
The smoker's who pay taxes on cigarettes are paying the Tobacco Settlement money 110%. Not the government and not Big Tobacco. But the smokers!
Thanks for the ping, Mears!!!
No I believe he figures that since he is on the border, people will go to TN to buy their cigarettes instead to save money. That is why he is worried about losing revenue and maybe laying off workers.
Gopv Blank-O in Louisiana was asking for a 50 cent per pack increase and one of the state legislator talked her into going for a $1.00 a pack, making La. 11th highest in the USA at $1.36 per pack tax.
Of course, this money is to fund a campaign promise made by the gov for teacher's pay raises. So i guess i'll have to start back smoking since it's for the chillrunnn!!!
She hasn't gotten it passed yet, but is working very hard for it.
Thanks. RPL. :D
What an jack@$$! Why not take the next step, John Boy? "If its a such a health issue, then ban the substance and lose the tax revenue...or are you just preening before the TV cameras?"
..btw, By that logic, Fat/Meat/Sugar...etc. are next. "..Is anybody ready for the sHillary Klintoon's ("It's ALL for the Chil'ren") "Lifestyle" Stormtroopers?"
Oooooooooo, a WHOLE PENNY.
And where does the rest of the tax go? Why, into someone's pork barrel, where else?
David Tandy of the American Cancer Society called the increase ``a monumental leap for a state like Kentucky for the American Cancer Society's bankroll.''
Let's call it like it is.
``I wish it would have been higher,'' said Rep. Jon Draud, R-Edgewood. ``Your goal is not to raise a lot of revenue, it's to get people to stop smoking.''
Forking social engineer. Tight hair net nanny stater.
I often wonder what has happened to people that they would elect socialistic politicians like this.
Yes, a whole penny. I think I would have kept my mouth shut.
Probably need that tax money for more pet programs.
The higher taxes on cigarettes and booze (I believe there was a 3rd)--the so-called SIN taxes--goes into effect July 1 in WA state. These taxes "for the children" are lies and more lies. It's a way to prop up a demoncRAT govt that REFUSES to cut spending.
"What the hell does the 20 cent tax in Tennesee have to do with Kentucky raising their taxes on tobacco?"
I think the only reason they compare to Tennessee is because if you compare it to any other state, the difference would be even greater. Cigs are probably close to $10 more a carton in some states such as Indiana compared to Tennessee. Compare them to New York.
I've never seen a more obvious sign of taxation without representation. I've found for many politicians in the south the R by their name is just decoration and has nothing to do with their behavior.
Not that being a Republican stands for much these days other than being spineless.
