If there was ever any doubt, Sen. Lincoln Chafees vote Wednesday against the nomination of Priscilla Owen has made it clear that, save for leadership numbers games, conservatives would not be any worse off with a Democrat than with Chafee (R., R.I.) in the Senate. Rhode Island Republicans will have a chance next year to avert that painful choice only if a serious primary challenger emerges and it could happen as soon as next week...

Chafee and Dewine---Let's Draw the Line!

Chafee is such a milquetoast. He reeks of Jefford-stink.
He's like Voinovich without tears.

Actually Chafee could be worse. He could pull a Jeffords move in the middle of a session of Congress. I'd rather know up front at the beginning of the session where Republicans stand in terms of numbers for support of leadership and important bills.

It wouldn't do him any good to join the minority. He benefits by being in the majority.
When Jeffords tipped the majority to the Dems he got keep his chairmanships and got other perks. Now he has nothing.

It wouldn't do him any good to join the minority. He benefits by being in the majority. Not in this session. But potentially he could do it in the future if there were a slimmer Republican majority. The longer we coddle him, the more dangerous he'll get. I'd rather eliminate him in the next election.

Better to dump him in the next election, and pick up some Republican seats in the process. Even if he jumps on Monday, the Republicans still hold on to the Senate.

I think it's time for the president or the leadership to play a little hard ball with some of these wavering pansy Senators.
Maybe cut a some of their pork for a while might bring them back in line with their voters.

RI is a solidly democrat state. They're not about to elect a Republican we like. A RINO is the best we can do in that state.

I don't think it's very likely at all that a more conservative Republican would get elected in Rhode Island. In fact, I don't think that a Republican like Chafee would get elected to the U.S. Senate from Rhode Island these days, had he not inherited the power of incumbency. But, the question is whether the GOP wants a Republican who contributes little more than provide cover for the Dems on key issues. Whenever you hear the statement "some Republicans joined Democrats" or "some Republicans share Democrats' concerns" or whatever, the "some Republicans" usually means "Chafee, and perhaps McCain"..
