'Hamas' is just another way of spelling 'a sham'.

That any Westerner would even contemplate treating Hamas with anything more than contempt is ridiculous...

I'm shocked, shocked I say, you mean democracy is leading to a totalitarian state???
Why that just can't happen !!! (except in France, Germany, Russia, China, Iran, Cuba, etc and soon to be in Iraq, Canada, US, and the EU)

"History is replete with examples of movements that sought to combine the use of the tools of democracy with the substantive rejection of its goals, and the desire eventually to subvert and destroy it. The totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century were examples of this type."

This is where I fear that Bush and friends are profoundly naive about their Wilsonian push for democracy across the Middle East -- yes, I would have Bush make periodic calls for more democracy around the world, but it should ALWAYS be coupled with the proviso that only groups and parties which are deeply committed to peaceful democratic means can be permitted to count. From Lenin to Hitler to the present day Islamo-fascist groups, history shows plenty of examples of ideologies that will not allow other parties to survive in any democratic setting. Nazis, communists, Islamo-fascists such as Hamas and Hezbollah.... they are all willing to cooperate in democratic politics only so long as they have to -- once they can take control they will rapidly exterminate all opposition.
