Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states remain the most significant source of funds flowing to the Islamist movements

Yet the Saudis are greeted with kisses when they visit....

How much more does it take for people to see
that we are engaged in a war for the very survival,
not just of ourselves but of every thing our culture
and society have produced for the last 2000 years,
not to mention the 200+ years of American freedom
and democracy?

Why do they persist in financing terrorism? Why not? They never feel any negative consequences for doing it, so why not just keep on keepin' on?

"How much more does it take"

I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that a nuclear device, either hot or dirty, going off in an American city will not change some peoples minds. Thank God there are some still in power in this country that understand the threat.

I Agree. The Saudi's are playing a game. They take U.S. money and fund our enemies then they play up to us like innocents. We dont take offense because they sell us oil.

I dont know the answer, If attack them we will piss off every one else who buys Saudi oil. If we dont attack them it will keep going on. Saudi is our enemy of that I have no doubt. Sooner or later we have to make a decision. The sooner the better IMO.

The people are more interested in obtaining material things than in the future of their country. The 200+ years of American freedom that you mention is unknown to the average man in the street. Courtesy of our present education system.

Hamoud al-Oqala al-Shuaibi,3 the late Saudi scholar whose Islamic edicts were adopted by Hamas and al-Qaeda, determined that "the highest and most exalted degree [in jihad] is the self-sacrificing jihad [martyrdom], as it is the most difficult for warriors, demanding of them the greatest self-sacrifice of martyrdom. The reward promised by God to the martyrs is well-known [marriage to 72 virgins, the right to intercede with God to bring 70 family members to Heaven, and enjoying the pleasures of Heaven] and is based on the premise that [self-sacrificing jihad] brings about the decisive submission of the enemy...imposing terror on him and breaking his spirit.

Whoopie! But if the rewards are that great, why don't we ever see a leading terrorist strap a bomb belt on himself and go earn all those percs? At the very least they should send their own sons, because the rewards are so great, right? Osama, for instance, has several sons so why are they holding back from Paradise?

A cynical observer might think that if the fearless Muslim leadership really believed in a martyr's Paradise that was all that desirable, they'd trample over other Muslims to get there.

Terrorism depends on finance in order to operate.

The financial backers are just as much terrorists as the actual bombers, and should be considered legitimate targets of war

Simple answer. Oil. Or lack of it. They need to do this for expansion, power, and strength. Their oil will be all but gone in 40 to 50 years. Sucked dry by ever expanding China and other countries. They probably have no desire to go back to tents in the sand and are looking to the future. Simply put, their oil is running out.

It would be very easy to cut off all Saudi funding of terrorists--if we had the will to get it done.....

Perhaps the Saudis are not just paying protection money to terrorists--but to some other folks as well....

My question is: if that nuclear device does go off, how are we going to retaliate and what degree of force will we dare to use?

What if the device is set off by one of our "American" muslims. Will we nuke his hometown?

Things were so much simpler during the cold war: you nuke me and you will not survive because of MAD (mutually assured destruction). At least, our enemy wore a uniform then.

It will be. And the desert around Mecca will glow for a thousand years thereafter also.

Such a person (or group people) would obviously need international help to secure such a device, and we'd uncover the culprits fairly quickly.

But your first question still stands: How would we respond, for instance, if we discovered that the nuke(s) originated in (our "ally") Pakistan with some "rogue" scientists passing on bombmaking materials to a terrorist org? Do we annihilate Pakistan? Doubtful. Should we annihilate Pakistan? Should we take out the epicenter of Islam itself (Mecca and Medina)?

Things were so much simpler during the cold war

That's for sure.

As long as they finance the activities of the jihadists sort of terrorists and keep them focused on the infidels, these same nutty jihadist bastards won't attack the corrupt and ignorant society which spawns them. Why is Islam so backward? It is not the fault of the West, the Chinese. the Indians, the Russians, the Africans, or any other than Islamic people themselves and it will never change until they figure out that their culture is a millstone around their necks. Other people at other times have figured out how to cast off their cultural impediments, and these Islamists could, as well. So far they haven't quite made the connection collectively, though many of them apparently do individually, or they would not be living in the American suburbs, sending their kids to Catholic schools.
