A certain amount of rebellion is healthy, correct. However, trying to deceive the Balinese Customs guys by concealing lots of high-grade, much sought after by the wealthy ex-pats and western travelers, hydroponic marijuana in a Boogie-Board on your fifth trip to the place, when you know that you are a smiling, charming young woman in full possession of her powers of seduction and influence, when you know you have charmed many, many others before, smacks of real arrogance and socio-pathology. (Excuse the long sentence...)
Such socio-pathology is indeed a sign of a troubled early childhood, and is not merely a "certain amount of rebellion" as you put it.

Your detailed description of what she did and how she did it seems to sink her pleas of innocence. But even so, for a judge to threaten a defendant from the bench to prevent her use of an appeal is preposterous.

It would be helpful if we knew how the authorities really caught her. Was she part of an organized ring with buyers already set up in Indonesia? Were Indonesians tipped off? Or was this a dog sniffing catch? If she's part of some nefarious drug ring, you'd think the Indonesians would have caught a few more and brought them to the dock. Perhaps they did and one of them cooperated and fingered Corby in order to get a lower sentence or even get off altogether. To bring this out in open court might be embarrassing.

It was hydroponic?I couldn't understand why anyone would risk smuggling 9lbs of M into Indonesia.Probably a very substantial profit involved if the customers are expats and tourists.
