Rep. Harold Ford Jr. Files for Frist's Senate Seat NewsMax.com Wires

Thursday, May 26, 2005 NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Democratic Rep. Harold Ford Jr. filed the federal paperwork Wednesday to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Majority Leader Bill Frist.

The five-term congressman from Memphis is the second Democrat to enter the 2006 race. Frist has said he does not plan to seek a third term.

"I'm excited. I'm ready to go," Ford said in telephone interview from Washington. He said his top issues will be energy reform, national security and education. Ford, 35, is a member of a Memphis political dynasty. He delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2000, unsuccessfully challenged Rep. Nancy Pelosi for the post of House minority leader in 2002 and served as a national campaign co-chairman for John Kerry's presidential run in 2004.

Ford's father represented Memphis in Congress for 22 years. An uncle is a state senator now under investigation {He has since resigned.} for his consulting deals with companies doing business with the state. Other uncles and cousins hold local offices.

State Sen. Rosalind Kurita is the only other declared candidate for the Democratic nomination. Republicans running for Frist's seat former Reps. Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary and former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker. © 2005 The Associated Press

Our Granddaughter is going to be working for Marsha Blackburn this summer. I guess that we will find out just how good she really is. I like her a lot, but do not know if she is ready for the next step.

Ford may have a few problems explaining the propensity of his relatives to defraud those around them.

I wonder just how far from the tree his apple fell, not far I would bet.

I also wonder if Tennessee is ready for a Black Congressional Caucus member who time after time sided with the blatant Louis Farrakan racists in his party just because some white or Hispanic person proposed a change.

Every time I think Ford has turned the corner and would represent all races equally he goes and sides with some off the wall racists crap and destroys his image.

Yes, there were also some VA people saying in 1989 that Rockefeller Republican Marshall Coleman would cream the "black" candidate Douglas Wilder.

There are a lot of us out here that remember Ford Sr. saying that he would not represent blue eyed devils that voted for his black Republican opponent, even though he is half white himself.

I'm not that familiar with Tennessee politics, but I am familiar with Southern politics.
To say that a Democrat can't win in the South is to underestimate your opponent.
We Virginians said the same thing about Mark Warner, and he's Governor right now.

Members of the House run for office every two years; if Ford gets the Democrat nomination for the Senate, he will have to give up his House seat. Some states allow a Senator to run for his Senate seat while making a presidential (or VP) bid; others don't. But as to the House and Senate, no one can run for both at the same time.

I'll second "under what previous names" McCain Mutiny?

You call a freeper who's been here nearly 5 years a liberal troll and offer no evidence and then when questioned about your lack of tenure you reply that "oh, you've been here since 99 under different names".

How convenient. Since 99 eh? Maybe you know where Bert really went..lol

I'd like to see evidence theodore r is a lib troll. His homepage sure doesn't indicate as such.

I'd also like to see some proof about who you really are since you drew first blood.

Here's a test Mac since you've been here since 99: Quick....name three freepers in the past 5 or 6 years who were not who they claimed...should be easy.

Thanks I didn't know just how that would work on a state level.

I am not saying that a Democrat cannot win in the South ( we have one as Governor), but I am saying that it will be next to impossible for a Memphis Ford to win statewide.

I'm quite certain that Theodore R is not a troll. I took a 2nd look at the Coburn threads.

The only thing TR was guilty of was occasional pessimism and concern about he thought was mistakes made by the Coburn camp. That's not trolling, but a critique. I've done the same many many times on policies and campaign strategies.

If Tennessee knows what's good for them, they'll get this guy out of politics ASAP!

The corruption of the Memphis Ford family is now chin high.
