Oh well, give them a few more years, and we'll find out
that the French were equal in numbers and died valiantly nearly winning, then a few more and they will have all called it a tie
and negotiated a peace.

No, but they now lost less pitifully but just as badly. Two ways of looking at "crushing defeat". Vastly outnumbered side wins. Losing side takes dispororinate casulaities.
Like that early 19th centuary naval battle whose name must not be mentioned. The EU side had 33 ships to 27 British. but they lost 22 ships to zero.
