first things first, if the candidate proves to be a strong candidate where their stands are what the American People want, then his or her religion won't play that big of a role....
That said though, Romney isnt that candidate and 2008 isn't going to be his year....

I have more of a chance to be President than Romney
Romney is quite a guy, and MA is lucky to have him as governor, but George Allen of VA. is looking more and more presidential these days.
I've met Mitt Romney (briefly). He's a charming, charismatic guy. He could get some of the soccer mom, I-like-him-because-he's-good-looking votes in a general election.
But he won't fire up the base, especially being somewhat flaccid on abortion.
Also, as you can see here, too many people are prejudiced against him for his religion, which obviously doesn't affect how he governs, and about which they are truly ignorant.
