McCain Urging Accord on Bolton and Secret Documents By DOUGLAS JEHL and CARL HULSE

WASHINGTON, May 27 - One of John R. Bolton's leading Republican backers, Senator John McCain of Arizona, signaled his support on Friday for a compromise in which the White House might allow Senate leaders access to highly classified documents in return for a final vote early next month on Mr. Bolton's nomination as United Nations ambassador.

The conciliatory signal from Mr. McCain came as Senate leaders traded blame over who was responsible for the miscalculation that led to Mr. Bolton's nomination being blocked Thursday. But the White House showed no sign that the Bush administration might change course.

"The Democrats who are clamoring for this have already voted against John Bolton," Scott McClellan, the White House spokesman, said in a telephone interview. "This is about partisan politics, not documents. They have the information they need."

Appearing on the Fox News Channel, Mr. McCain reiterated his support for Mr. Bolton. He also praised an argument made by, among others, Senator Richard G. Lugar, Republican of Indiana, who has urged the administration to provide the Senate with more information related to Mr. Bolton's conduct. Senators calling on the administration to share the documents "have some substance to their argument," Mr. McCain said.

An English major and a former Marine!

I should have known from your post--the elements of both are plainly there!

Thanks for serving our country.

Based on the Senate's track record regarding keeping a secret, it would be better for the country's defense to publish highly classified on Free Republic and telling the Senators to just read the appropriate thread.

Since liberals don't come here, that means the secrets would never be published in the New York Times or Washington Post.

"I can't believe that Frist is running for President"

I doubt his campaign will last very long. Rove should have never pushed out Trent Lott. This would have never happened with him at the helm.

The Repubican Senate is a JOKE. Frist is a JOKE. George (Islam is a religion of peace) Bush is close to becoming a president equal to his incompetent father. And we Americans are the brunt of it. We have a Congress a Supreme Court that is more interested in how we treat Muslims or Mexicans that their taxpayers. What we true Americans MUST do is become more vocal / ACTIVE than the opposition. If we sit back & allow any more of this action by the leftist we will seal our fate as a lost society. OUR WINDOW OF ACTION IS MEASURED IN MONTHS. Liberty comes with a price. Have you all had enough of this BS by our elected officials & are we ready to kick some butt.

he's a maverick and proud of it

Rush played a parody song today about McCain, to the tune of the old "Maverick" tv series. It was hilarious! Rush said they first did it 5 years ago, but it could have been written this morning.

McPain was also on Conan's show, made a joke about the recent plane scare in DC about when they told him "RUN" he thought they meant for prez. What a yutz.

How about stripping some of these prima donnas some of the more desirable perks?

I like the idea, but for one thing, we're gonna really need their votes, that's why.

I heard the song, very much in tune with the current situation.

I also caught the clip and the leader of the McCaine Mutiny yukking it up,, about the "Run, Run" quip when the small plane caused the alert..

Yup. Yutz and Putz, all in one! lol

Well of course we'll never know, but I'm not so sure of that. Lott was the one who facilitated all that "power sharing" stuff with Daschle and he made me very angry.
