Will the Birds Stop Returning to Delaware Bay?

By TINA KELLEY

Published: May 23, 2005

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. - The red knots were already three days late on their flight north from the bottom of the world and the people waiting for them were beginning to get nervous. The birds' dining table was not even set.

On the full moon of the fifth month of the year, horseshoe crabs crawl up on the beaches of Delaware Bay to mate, as they have for 200 million years. A decade ago, they covered the beach like cobblestones, and flocks of red knots, chubby brown-flecked shorebirds the size of robins, would stop to eat the crabs' eggs, doubling their body weight before flying nonstop for three days straight to reach Southampton Island in Canada, just below the Arctic Circle. There they would spend a few weeks bulking up again and breeding before flying back to their winter home, Tierra del Fuego, at the southern tip of South America. The annual round-trip migration covers an estimated 20,000 miles.

But the horseshoe crabs, so vital to the birds' survival, have fallen in numbers along the shores of Delaware Bay. As a result, the population of red knots spotted in the area plummeted to 13,315 last year from 50,360 in 1998, and scientists predict it will be extinct in five years. So a group of volunteer beach stewards have joined to help the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection revive the feeding frenzy that used to announce the arrival of summer more loudly than Memorial Day tourists driving along the sparsely populated bay shore.

Crabs saw beach closed signs and stayed off the beach.

Maybe the red knots adapted and found other dinner tables with sufficient food?

Maybe they got tired of going to the beach every year, and headed to Vegas.

"abortion mills OPEN to kill God's Image."

Yeah, God has ear hair. And burps. And has an appendix.

Or maybe your storybook is wrong.

Not much meat on those birds. A woodcock looks like a turkey compared to those things.

I wouldn't waste my time hunting those ugly little things...let'em die off. More crabmeat.

"The Holy Bible is the word of God."

The bible was written by catholics, men, not god. It was a compromise, dictated by the emperor Constatine around 350 AD. Most chapters were thrown out, leaving a just a few in.

There were many religeons in those days. Lots of bloodshed over beliefs. Constatine compromised. He even declared christmass as christs birthday, to coincide with another relegious holiday, although it was not true.

It is a big fairytale. Just like the pope being infallable. Want to hear what former popes did?

ah, so you're a Catholic Basher too. I've met some dimwits on the FR but I think you may be in the top ten on my list or maybe the top 5. Surely, you are no Christian.

Let me educate you about the bible, namely the first 5 books of the bible which is called the Torah by Jews and the Pentateuch by non-Jews: Catholics and Protestants. These 5 books, were dictated by God (including man being made in His image) to Moses on Mt. Sinai for 40 days. I thought most people knew that but I guess I was wrong.

TORAH (The Law):

God revealed the Torah through Moses. It is thus written, "Moses commanded us the Torah, an inheritance to the congregation of Jacob" (Deut. 33:4).

The entire Torah was therefore written by Moses as dictated by God. This included all the happenings recorded in it from the time of creation.

Moses wrote all of God's words" (Exodus 24:4). Before completing the covenant, he read this part of the Torah. It is written, "[Moses] took the Book of the covenant, and read it so that the people would hear. They said, 'All that God has spoken, we will do and we will listen'" (Exodus 24:7).

After this, God would call Moses to the Tent of Meeting (Ohel Moed) to dictate the Torah to him. God would call Moses, and Moses would acknowledge that he was ready.

God would dictate each passage of the Torah to Moses, and Moses would repeat it aloud. He would then write it down.

Who composed the original Torah? How is a scroll written today? Is our current text accurate?

Here, learn something about the bible, perhaps you can read it some time.

Genesis
Chapter 1
26
4 Then God said: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground."
27
God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them.
28
God blessed them, saying: "Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth."

4 [26] Man is here presented as the climax of God's creative activity; he resembles God primarily because of the dominion God gives him over the rest of creation.

While facts don't seem to matter to anti-Catholic bigots such as yourself, you should know that it wasn't the case that a Roman emperor (not Constantine, actually, but Aurelian) set the commemoration of Christ's birth on December 25 in order for it to fall on the same day as the pagan "Birth of the Unconquered Sun," but, on the contrary, Aurelian invented the "Birth of the Unconquered Sun" holiday out of whole cloth and set it on December 25 (which is actually 4 days after the Winter Solstice, which makes no sense) so that it would fall on the same day as Christmas, which had long been commemorated by Christians as the birth of Christ.
