Sinn Fein offers 'British spy bug' for sale
Wed May 25,10:31 AM ET

BELFAST (Reuters) - The Irish Republican party Sinn Fein has put up for auction on the Internet what it says is a bugging device used by Britain to spy on one of its offices.

Bidding has been brisk, it says, the price is now up to $1,900 and the money will be used to fund "the campaign for Irish unity and freedom."

"This auction is for part of a British MI5 bugging device found hidden in the floorboards of a Sinn Fein office in Belfast in September 2004," it said in a statement on Sinnfeinbookshop.com.

"This is a unique opportunity," it added. "A historical item such as this has never before been made available and it's highly unlikely that it will happen again."

The successful bidder will also be given a handwritten letter of authentication from Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, leader of the Irish Republican Army's political ally campaigning to oust Britain from Northern Ireland.

"The British make it very hard to make peace when all this is going on," Adams said after the alleged discovery in a party office in the Republican heartland of West Belfast.

When eBay starts offering chances to kneecap Gerry Adams, count me in.

I've got a better idea.

Whaddya say the Brits sell on eBay every slug or piece of shrapnel or bomb fragment dug out of the corpses of the men, women and children killed by these thugs in the last 25 years. Then, take the proceeds (and any private donations) and put an international bounty on the known leaders and cadre of the IRA. Once the ID'd heads are delivered to the authorities, the money for each cockroach extirmination could be release the the rogue's head could be piked on the Tower of London in historic fashion.

Maybe we sue Britain for my grandfather's land back and the millions of dead Irishmen over the last SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS!

No, that's an irrelevant idea. Whatever may or may not have occured there that you've got issues with has nothing to do with the the Marxist scum that rule the show today. Put down your inherited hate and look at what the structure, leadership and linkages are in today's IRA. I got a clue for you - it ain't about religion or your grandfather's land.

I nearly forgot, the US kept price high on grain at the time of the 'famine' to make a profit while Britain tried to eleviate the problem. Nice one, and conveniently forgot by some.

Would the slugs fired by the first paras in Derry against peaceful demonstrators, killing 13, be part of the deal?

Why the scare quotes? You deny there was a famine?

I suggest you pick up Woodham-Smith's 'The Great Hunger' and inform yourself about British policies in Ireland and how they led to the famine.

It's not a scare tactic at all.

One of the key factors that led to the famine was potato blight, any fool can see that. And if you invest in a single crop disaster is just around the corner. Hind sight is a great thing but hardly an argument, if you go back further in history you'd find Ireland was 'gifted' to an English King by a Pope, so it's his fault?

Just remember the US has no great track record in race relations.

"Scare quotes", guy. Google the phrase if you're not familiar with it.

One of the key factors that led to the famine was potato blight, any fool can see that. And if you invest in a single crop disaster is just around the corner.

Problem was, English absentee landlords invested in the crop, and Irishmen died. I'm all for living with the consequences of one's own actions, but its harder to live with the consequences of others'

Hind sight is a great thing but hardly an argument, if you go back further in history you'd find Ireland was 'gifted' to an English King by a Pope, so it's his fault?

Even stipulating the dubious proposition that the Pope has the right to give someone else's country away, since ol' Henry the VIII broke with the Pope over the dicey question of his sex life, he could hardly continue to claim Papal authority for his claim to Ireland, could he? Come to think of it, if you're going to invoke Papal authority, throw those kraut interlopers out of Buck House, and reinstate the Jacobite heir to the throne. I have no idea who that is, BTW, probably some dissolute French barkeep. Whatever; he could hardly be any more embarrassing than the current occupants.

Just remember the US has no great track record in race relations.

My family was starving on mouldy potatoes, while being run out of various Northern Ireland towns on account of their religion during the heyday of slavery. I take no responsibility for the ancient history of my adopted country; just for its current policies.

well I gotta clue for you,
since you obviously don't know dick about what's going on...
there is no "marxist scum" "running the show"...
The Brit occupation forces are "running the show", genius.
And what it's about is the MILLIONS OF DEAD IRISHMEN, IT'S ABOUT THE IRISH GENOCIDE AND IT'S ABOUT SELF DETERMINATION...

What it's about, it's about time for the Brits to go home(and they can take their "loyalists" land grabbing invaders and occupiers and union jack with them) and it's also about time for the Crown to GET A JOB and stop living off the rest of us!

Wasn't the papal bull that "gifted" Ireland to Henry II a forgery?

"Living of the rest of us." Do you live in Northern Ireland?

Anyway, the marxist scum are running the show as much as the bigotted Ian Paisley and his DUP are. Both sides are holding the rest of the people hostage by digging their heels in and refusing to move forward toward peace.

The British government has bent over backwards making concessions to SF/IRA. Do you see border guards anymore? How many bases and police stations have been closed? And yet, the provos refuse to disarm. The unionist people are sick of it and proved it by voting UUP out.

Unionists - families that have lived in Ulster for generations have just as much right to live there as anyone else. Why should they have to get the boat back?

God, I'm so sick of plastic paddies who cry about terrorism, but then say oh no don't talk about my Irish freedom fighters that way.

Hence the reason I asked if you live in Northern Ireland.
