The initial salvo was that Bush is the “worst president in history” and it is now “impossible to be a Republican.”

If you’re going to chastise the over-the-top responses, you should not minimize the ridiculously over-the-top premise they were responding to.

I have done my share of criticizing Bush, specially on immigration, spending and the "religion of peace" bit, so lockstep has never been an issue with me.
