"Six or seven years from now...I'll check in on this. I do not believe you can judge ANY president before they are no longer president.

Sometimes, the things that seem the smartest at the moment are not—and the things that seem downright stupid at the time appear pretty prescient. Emotions are for now, but consequences are forever.

That being said...not very many people have been proved brilliant by misunderestimating GW. The man is almost unbelievably patient. (Obviously more patient than most of us) And he works harder than it looks. I would never bet against him at this point.

Oh...and he has an uncanny knack for being very polite—but I'm not sure I would necessarily describe him as nice."

Well said. And it may be that President Bush will usher in a new era of traditional conservatism. I am optimistic even though things never seem to move fast enough.

"And it may be that President Bush will usher in a new era of traditional conservatism."

If this 'new era' refers to a period of time where 'conservatism' means pro-borrow and spend, pro-massive entitlement programs, pro-socialist security, pro-foreign welfare, pro-open borders, pro-illegal immigration, pro-deficit, anti-individual rights, anti-privacy, anti-gun, and sucks up to our enemies (Putin, China, Saudi Arabia, etc), then count me out of it. I must be one of those oddball oldtimers who still thinks that small government, individual rights, securing our borders, and balanced budgets are the way to go. Silly me.

You know, I don't always agree with him...but then, as I've said before, I don't always agree with myself...so no sense holding him to a higher standard. However I really admire the man personally, and wholeheartedly believe he is a straight shooter. If that makes me a Bushbot, so be it.

During the election, he talked about good judges. So I believe that in his own way, and own time, he will get conservative nominees confirmed. I don't think he is going to bend much on those. I don't remember him talking about border issues much. So while I am a disappointed he didn't, those who expected him to do something amazing just weren't listening and I worked to get him elected despite that.

I've quit arguing about GWB with my friends. Some hate him because he is too conservative, some hate him because of Iraq, some even still think he is stupid and others that he is way too liberal. It doesn't matter now. I get to sit back and see how much of what I believe in will be accomplished. I hope for more. I remember hearing these same arguments during the Reagan years...especially right after he was reelected. Funny, as a liberal then, I was sure that the Republican party was going to break in a bajillion pieces and soon! Little did I know that if you can't beat them, join them.

I've decided to put my political energies into discussing conservative principles with my friends and eventually perhaps they'll embrace them. Then we'll have a better opportunity for more conservatives to be elected and these other things will get done.

IMO, we've got to quit freaking out over the little bumps that are right in front of us and concentrate on getting over the mountains we're gonna have to climb miles down the road.
