As of two days ago, I have a 10 year old son. As a parent, I would do everything I could to get this fixed now. It cannot be fixed and it will not be fixed. The school system is in meltdown (with a very few exceptions duly noted). If you can afford the money for private schooling, or the time required for home schooling, please consider it.

I completely agree, but I'm curious WHY you think the schools are in meltdown? Personally, I put a significant %'age of the blame on the FEDERAL efforts to help. I hate the idea that the FEDERAL Gov't has such control over funding and because of that they have a say in what gets taught, how it is taught, how high or low the bar is set and where the money gets spent. The FED's have a long history of screwing things like this up and I believe (ie: SS. Tax for one thing, spend on another), frankly, that it plays directly into the hands of the UN type Socialists (read: Hillary et. al.). A well armed (as in: armed with guns, information, understanding of history, founding documents of this country) society is tougher to control. A poorly educated society is more easily disarmed. Keeps me up at night.
As to your suggestion: many years ago my wife got us on the waiting list for a new Charter School which just happens to be about 10 minutes from where I work. It is bloody demanding! We have to get the kids there, pick them up, do 40 hours/year of volunteer hours, longer school year, longer school days, uniforms, they assign significant homework. But, I have a 1st grader and two 3rd graders and compared to the kids in our area that go to the neighborhood school...well, lets just say it makes it worth the extra effort.
