SOMETHING very interesting happened on Friday in Baltimore: Rudy Giuliani showed up and got a standing ovation.
Now that doesn't sound surprising, given the wild popularity of the former New York mayor across the country. But the occasion was a commencement address at Loyola College of Maryland, a Catholic school. When he found out that Giuliani was to be the speaker at commencement, William Cardinal Keeler said he would not attend because Giuliani has pro-choice views.
Anti-abortion groups in Maryland vowed they would rally hundreds to demonstrate against the former mayor. In the end, six whole people showed up - and to make matters a little more comical, it turned out that Cardinal Keeler had never attended a commencement ceremony at Loyola.
What we saw here was a very preliminary test case of Giuliani's political future and his capacity to overcome the cultural and moral obstacles in his path in the Republican Party. The failure to engage pro-lifers in an anti-Giuliani protest - a protest that was effectively granted a seal of approval by the leading Catholic cleric in the area - indicates the reservoir of affection for Rudy in the party runs quite deep.
He was given a hero's welcome at the GOP convention here in New York last year. And in the most recent Marist College poll of Republican contenders, Rudy leads the field (including John McCain) with 27 percent.

Here's a prediction: Catholics would overwhelmingly support Rudy Guiliani for President, especially if Hillary Clinton is the opposition.
I would give Rudy a standing ovation too, but I would never vote for him for president.
I think so too.
And this is funny. Keeler declined to attend a ceremony he had never attended.
A standing ovation at a JESUIT college in MARYLAND hardly demonstrates ANYTHING other than the fact that liberals who consider themselves Catholic support Giuliani.
Why the heck are so many people in a conservative forum so enchanted with this phoney liberal?
If you like John McCain, you'll LOVE Giuliani!
Sorry but I can't stomach John McCain. Rudy is harmless. People like Rudy - he's a likeable person. He makes news and that's what I'm posting. Let Rudy run - he won't win so there is nothing to fear!
I would never bet on that. If his opposition is Chuck Hagel, John McCain, and Alan Keyes, he'll win in a walk.
After the Senate catastrophe, now way should we let any RINO get near the White House.
You might be right. If Rudy does as well as he is doing right now with people in the South - he just might win. He's drawing crowds wherever he goes. It's going to be an interesting race.
"People like Rudy - he's a likeable person."
That's what makes him dangerous. He has a very pleasant veneer - but the veneer is thin.
Beneath it is a fascistic mind - the kind of guy who made war on pretzel and knish vendors in New York, putting them in the same class as the notorious "squeegee boys" and banning private ownership of ferrets as "wild animals" - they have been domesticated since Roman Times at least.
There is also a very liberal anti-gun, pro-homosexual, pro-illegal invader streak, along with a history of having opposed Republican candidates and supporting Dems - while holding office as a Republican in New York.
Giuliani's likeability even wore thin in liberal New York City - he would have gone down as one of New York's least popular mayors if it were not for 9-11.
Well we can't really tell what will happen by 2008. I'd be more worried about McCain than Guiliani. McCain just got brownie points with the Moderates Repubs and Moderate Dems yesterday.
I wouldn't rule him out over one issue like abortion. That would be lowering myself to the Democrats level. He'd be good on Security issues in a time of world crises.
So far I haven't seen any other more conservative candidates that are more attractive or who could win.
I am not a one issue person either. I will take Rudy over McCain or an unknown. Rudy would be tough on the Security issue. We'll see - its kinda early yet. I am waiting to see who else is waiting in the wings to run. I definitely will NOT vote for Frist!
that's nuts. Rudy and McCain are both gun-grabbing socialists, at least Frist isn't that.
I guess it is to the point of voting for the least of two evils. For an example, there are a few issues of which I cannot support W on. That does not mean that I would turn to a lib candidate.
Frist is just incompetent.I want Mike Pence.
With all due respect, it is a bit simplistic to label him as a "phony liberal." Yes is not a conservative on every issue, but he definitely knows how to lead, and is conservative on many fiscal issues. If he runs against any democrat currently being discussed as a serious presidential candidate, I'll take Rudy in a heartbeat.
i've decided to not vote for the least of to evils any more. too hard to live with myself afterwards.
the next man i vote for will stand for the US Constitution or i'm staying home. just something i've come to realize these last few years. i won't be part of the destruction of our Nation anymore.
That's what happens when you believe the Baltimore Sun can influence pro lifers to hate Rudy.
I'm pro life and I think he would make a great President.
