***.....In classic Senate style, the agreement was followed by a rush of self-congratulatory speeches - and disagreement over what it meant.

Democrats, pointing to a slight change in wording from an earlier draft, said the deal would preclude Republicans from attempting to deny them the right to filibuster. Republicans said that was not ironclad, but valid only as long as Democrats did not go back on their word to filibuster only in extraordinary circumstances.

One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the issue had been discussed at the meeting in McCain's office, and was "clearly understood" by those in attendance.....***

Like a Cheshire Cat. Then again, what can you expect from squishy moderates? A squishy agreement non-agreement that settles nothing. I'd be surprised if the "deal" lasts beyond the nominees coming up for a vote. We will know then if its a surrender to the Democrats. If that's the case, the GOP can kiss its Senate majority good-bye in '06. We need friends like these like we need enemies...

The problem with anonymity is the lack of accountability

The pandering to Robert Byrd by Warner and the others as shown on the news of this awsome cave in, was in my mind, showing the American people what closed minds this senate has. If McCain wants the glory for this let the headlines read:

MCCAIN SNATCHES DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY!

Is McCain the new majority leader? It appears he just hi-jacked the senate...like his past history, John McCain goes to the other side if he can be on top.
