George Wallace and Lester Maddox.... are they the racist Democrat governors you are referring to? Or are you referring to all those Democrat senators, like Al Gore Sr., who voted against the Civil Rights act?

Lester Maddox and George Wallace are indeed the right wing politicians I was refering to. The terms 'republican' and 'right wing' did not become synonymous until after Barry Goldwater's Presidential run and the completion of the civil rights movement. This transition was in its early stages in '63 when Wallace stood in front of the courthouse. He was an independent by '68.

Al Gore Sr. Civil Rights Record -
- Voted against the Poll Tax of 1942
- Voted for Civil Rights Act of 1957
- Nominated 2 young black students from Memphis for appointment to US Air
Force Academy - risky in Tennessee in 1957
- Voted for 1965 Voters Rights Act
- 1968 Fair Housing Act
- Al Gore Sr. apologized for his 1964 vote and called it a big mistake. He was concerned that it went to far to fast and would be used to cut off funding of schools who appeared to be in violation.
