I read the no rules change as being expressly contingent upon the Dem 6 following through on their no-filibuster for future nominees pledge. Clearly, ideology alone is not an extraordinary circumstance, since they agreed to confirm the 3 most conservative nominees.
That's how Lindsey Graham is reading it as well.. If Lindsey reads it that way, you can rest assured that so does DeWine...
No definition of extreme or extreme circumstances.
How very Senatorial to leave interpretation wide open.
No wonder the RINOs and the newbies were on the podium.
Not enough tenure to see the BS.
Absolutely...I still smell a Rove-ian tactic here to embarass the RINOs and greatly diminish their power/influence.
If it's as inane as your posts, then I'd agree.
Even better..
This deal by the traitor RINOs virtually guarantees (gulp)..
PRESIDENT HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON.
Get used to it, gang.
*** THE BASE IS NOT GOING TO VOTE (R) IN '06 ***
Hope that traitor McCain thought it through. But, he's too damned busy thinking he's going to be POTUS (he's not, Hillary will crush him) to care.
What if Jim is correct....what if the 6 have decided to sell out Brown and Owens.
Oh yeah, I understand that. Believe you me, I understand.
Republicans should change their mascot from an elephant to a eunuch.
First time DUers and Freepers pissed at the same time at the same thing!
I respect your opinions, but I share this informed opinion from Bench memos on National Review:
About the Deal
[Sean Rushton 05/23 08:33 PM]
Two quick points responding to the moderates deal on judicial filibuster: 1. The national center-right coalition opposing judicial filibusters, and the Senate leadership, will continue to push for an up or down vote on every qualified judicial nominee.
2. The fact that Senate Democrats are willing to allow cloture on Owen, Brown, and Pryor indicates that conservative judicial philosophy cannot be considered the basis for a filibuster, or an extraordinary circumstance.
Sounds about right to me.
Can someone please give the Cliff notes version of what the heck this all means? Who gets what?
'they want to grind their advisary in the dirt and humiliate them mercilously.'
Not that there is anything wrong with that!
You nailed it (as much as I wish it weren't so)!
Shocking....:-)
I agree, if at some time later on they try to filibuster, we can always pull the Constitutional option out again/
It gets 3 judges confirmed. Other than that, the Dems agreed to essentially nothing, not even to vote for cloture in non extraordinay circumstances (which "extraordinary" defined by them), just that they don't think the filibuster is appropriate in such circumstances. The nuke option is off the table until 2007, in the final two years of Bush's term, when the Dems might have more votes than they do now.
There's only one good thing here: Frist is dead as a presidential candidate unless he successfully pulls the nuclear trigger at some point in the future. Today's sellout by the RINOs makes that very unlikely.
The 2008 field has begun to take shape. And Bush is starting to look like a lame duck.
