I wasn't so pessimistic before, but after reading the actual document it is clear that the 14 Senators killed the nuclear option. Since the definition of "extraordinary" is left up to each Senator's interpretation, Frist now has no recourse if Reid and 40 other 'Rats filibuster every single SCOTUS nominee that the President sends up -- even the three that get cloture for the Circuit Courts.

I am so disgusted with DeWine that it isn't even funny.

Thank you for the information---sounds like my lunch with Kailey will be at the exact same time as the cloture vote...

oh well....I will video tape it in case anything untoward happens like, oh, say the cloture motion doesn't pass and Frist has to call for the constitutional option!! LOL

I dont' know if the dem 7 will uphold their end of the deal or not, but it would be suicide for them to support a filibuster right now. Political suicide.

No. This is how politics works. Ken Salazar has broken a promise he made less than a year ago, when he was running for the Senate, to give Pres Bush's nominees an up or down vote. But none of the Colorado papers have pointed out the broken promise. Instead, when Focus on the Family started running some ads to point this out, all the Colo. papers ignored the basic issue (Salazar's broken promise) and ran with a 'Should the Religious Right be allowed to control every aspect of our lives' story. Front page for several days.

Salazar will pay no price for his treachery. A conservative majority on the Supreme Court is now, officially, a pipe dream. This agreement is nothing more than cover for the RINO's to continue to oppose the filibuster on a pretext of principle. And filibusters there will be each time a decent judges is nominated.

The folks who want to pretend there is strategery at work here are naive. This was a putsch by seven weak, vacillating Senators, who now control the judicial nomination process. Frist was taken by surprise and was, impotently, angry. There is no silver lining.

My party disgusts me. This is high tide. And we can accomplish nothing.

I was wondering---I saw the agreement and in Section 2 Part B, there is a statement that sounds an awful lot like the Reps agree not to vote on anything that "changes the rules" from what they are now...

Am I wrong? and if I'm not wrong, then why am I getting blasted by some for being bummed, and why is everyone else so happy about this deal?

I hate hysteria. Except in southern women where it has its charm. In freepers, it is sort of creepy and weird especially with all the allusions to rape and urination.

Sure ... but as the Senate Majority Leader and the director of this mission, AND in representation of the wishes of your Republican President of the United States .. wouldn't you expect one of your team to INFORM YOU and keep you in the loop?? This was done totally behind Frist's back .. a conspiracy .. with their own agendas, NONE bigger or more selfish and self-serving than McCain.

The Senate has always governed according to the NYT editorial page, and NOT their constituents.

That is who they did this for.

The elite NY liberals have run this country for 40 years, and continue to do so.

If I was Pete Coors I would put up some money for a hugh ad-buy in Colorado and just pound it out to the citizens of Colorado what a liar they voted for....

And if I was John Kyl, I would put an ad out in Arizona saying it was the OTHER Arizona Senator that screwed the pooch...

And what does McCain and his gang do?? Bail the Democrats butts out of the fire .. AGAIN This should have been dealt with now .. not down the road .. now !

How do you propose that they be "dealt with". These are all grown men and free to do what they want. McCain is a maverick megalomaniac. He is uncontrollable, he thinks he is in charge. But he did make it clear that he finds the judicial fiibusters wrong and this agreement is an attempt to stop them without having a partisan Senate Rules battle. And he thinks it makes him look good.

I'm sure Rush will rip McCain a new one tomorrow. Laura Ingraham did an hour live at the NYC radio WABC-AM tonight at 8pm and did just that (we usually get her show from the morning). She is livid at him.

McCain's trouble is that he believes what the MSM says about him. That is always the wrong path, when you begin to belive your own publicity. His name is mud.

"why is everyone else so happy about this deal?"

Just for the record, I am not, in any way whatsoever, happy about this deal.

Let's pretend our guys are a baseball team. We're leading 10-5 in the 9th inning, with two out. But... nah, Ragin' John McCain insists that it's HIS turn to pitch, comes in, and intentionally walks in 6 runs, then crows about how good it feels to not have the other side humilated by their loss (while, of course, preening for the TV cameras). Meanwhile, people on our own side say: "Well, we won a couple of other games, what's YOUR problem...?" Uh-huh.

If I recall correctly, McCain bailed out Kerry's butt during one of the conventions with his reaction to a Swiftie ad.

This...thing...is not over by a long shot. I want to see those sh*teating grins wiped off those traitorous faces. (Note to Jim Robinson: I have never used that word before and do not intend to ever use it again, but I am too upset to curb my mouth right now. Can I have a waiver this one time?)

I am going to try to get some sleep now. Tomorrow is another day....to see what is going to happen.

Be careful, you might be accused of being hysterical!!!

But, I do agree with you, just the fact that Frist had ordered the cots and was willing to let this play out, had Reid and the dems scared, you could tell....

But, no, Frist wasn't even given the chance as THE MAJORITY LEADER to approve and announce the deal---like a poster said, this was a coup d'etat by a group of 14 senators, and by diminishing Sen. Frist, they have managed to diminish the whole Senate.

These people were NOT given this job, they weren't asked to "save the Senate"--there were millions of Americans, whose votes were ignored tonight...no matter how it turned out, I didn't have a Senator in that group of 14...my two Senators have been out on the Senate floor of an on for 4 days talking their hearts out for Priscilla Owen, Janice Brown, and their rights as the ELECTED MAJORITY PARTY to do their jobs!!!

You're right, when McPain denounced the SwiftVets that was just the end of him with me. There was always something about him that I could never quite pin down, that made me uneasy. All through the 2000 presidential primaries, people who thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread would go on about what an independent politician he was, I was never comfortable about joining that bandwagon. The way he's performed in the past 5 years have made me increasingly glad I didn't. He is nothing but putrid scum.

If I knew they were working on a deal, how come Frist didn't? If I knew what the deal was likely to be, how come Frist didn't?

I read 2B the same way; it's unconditional. The Nuclear option is dead. Reid can now block anything he wants to. The only way out is if Dewine and Graham reinterpret the text if the 'Rats abuse extraordinary, but the clear language in 2B would leave them open to a (IMHO) valid charge of reneging on the deal.

The Republican Caucus should strip all of these seven of chairmanships and hit them in the pocketbooks. I'm afraid that won't happen.
