Leaving the left

Leaving the left
I can no longer abide the simpering voices of self-styled progressives -- people who once championed solidarity

Nightfall, Jan. 30. Eight-million Iraqi voters have finished risking their lives to endorse freedom and defy fascism. Three things happen in rapid succession. The right cheers. The left demurs. I walk away from a long-term intimate relationship. I'm separating not from a person but a cause: the political philosophy that for more than three decades has shaped my character and consciousness, my sense of self and community, even my sense of cosmos.

I'm leaving the left -- more precisely, the American cultural left and what it has become during our time together.

I choose this day for my departure because I can no longer abide the simpering voices of self-styled progressives -- people who once championed solidarity with oppressed populations everywhere -- reciting all the ways Iraq's democratic experiment might yet implode.

Perhaps your saying is that though the left and liberalism are today synonymous, they historically were not. That would make sense to me, and that's what it sounds like Keith is getting at.

Thanks and welcome to our world.

I've sent your piece to all my liberal friends (well, both of them), because the words mean so much more coming from you than they ever would from me.

With your help, we may even be able to salvage one of them.

Well good luck. Aim high- try for both.

And remember, it's Keith Thompson whom we must thank.

That's not news. There's a loaded bus leaving the left bank every 15 minutes now. As the pace picks up, there'll be trainloads on the half hour -- leaving Palookaville.

There's nothing left staying for. All they have are looters. Nobody but Howard Dean and Harry Reid to exhort them on to "one more fight, one last stand, battle to the death," while they're loading their own cars with the silverware ready to take flight.

The dribble has turned to a tide and eventually a tsunami. Expect to see more capitulation in the days ahead. Go easy on them; no need to tell them you told them so.

The pity they see in everybody's eyes is humiliation enough.

Wait, you mean the right wing "hate machine" "conned" someone into believing that their message was good?

It's better late than never my friend.

You know when I became a conservative? I was 9 years old and Jimmy Carter was doing nothing about American hostages in Iran, he told America they were in a "malaise" as a way to tell us why we were faced with double digit unemployment, interest rates and crumbling steel and auto industries. My father, working for U.S. Steel went to work every day and I was convinced because of liberal leadership that every Friday may be the last day paycheck he ever collected at his job.

Then along came Ronaldus Magnus and told us of a shining city on the hill and that it was morning in America again. He identified evil in the modern world, the USSR, and set us apart from the world which we are. I saw first hand in trips to East Germany and Berlin that our country was ideed on the side of right and free people don't live behind gun towers, mine fields and barbed wire.

Being a student of history at 10 I knew of the Soviet pogroms, military purges, forced collectivization, gulags, the betrayal of Eastern Europe at Potsdam and the like. The fact that a 10 year old boy could identify evil and the American left could not is something that stuck with me for life. To this day they still cannot identify the forces of evil in this world.

I say welcome but I have to wonder, why did a ten year old boy see this and you didn't for the 35 years I've been alive?

We all weren't born the same person -- with the same experiences in life.

Any time a person sees the light, is the right time for them. It took whatever it took to get them there. What matters is that they got there -- and where they go from here.

Perhaps your saying is that though the left and liberalism are today synonymous,

For what it's worth I view liberalism as the current dominating philosophy of academia at any given time. For our Founders Liberalism meant freedom from government, self rule, private property, inalienable rights granted from our creator,Natural Law, etc. Those ideas where the culmination of the great thinkers to that point. They were in fact Liberally educated. Today, Liberalism now means post modern philosophical ideas, with both God and truth being killed thus enter in revisionist history, the twisting of truth and other bizarre positions that seem so contradictory but completely fit todays liberalism because truth is now an individual perspective. This leads to PC, multiculturalism, etc but for what reason...power? What else can it be since it isn't spiritual, it isn't a singular truth?........IMO

I remember the eighties when Reagan, who I didn't vote for, made his "evil empire" comment. There was all this noise coming from the lib press about how awful it was for Reagan to say something like that. I scratched my head and wondered why it was wrong for Reagan to say something that was patently obvious.

When "Ronnie Raygun" came out with SDI, the same media libs laughed and scorned the idea. Again I wondered what was so wrong with using modern technology to defend ourselves. The critics of SDI made ridiculous comments to the effect that we didn't have the capability to use such weapons. Again I wondered well no, that takes R and D, but what was wrong with the idea.

When Reagan said that the Sandinistas were a bunch of commie rats, again the lib press corps went ballistic. Again I wondered why get upset over Reagan stating the obvious.

The press also was enraged over Iran-Contra while the rest of the country yawned. As a Democrat, I yawned too. I strongly suspect that they were far more concerned about the prospect of the Sandinistas being overthrown than they were that Reagan might have done something illegal. I guess my switch from Dem to Republican was inevitable.

Liberals are reduced to slamming our capitalist system to defend SS. A great many of these same libs are of course heavily invested in the stock market...and filthy rich in no small part due to that investment. Which once again proves that libs are the biggest stinking hypocrites in existence.
