Monroe-area clerk will run
Saturday, May 21, 2005
The clerk of Monroe County's Bedford Township this week became the first candidate into the race to replace state Sen. Beverly Hammerstrom.

Bob Schockman announced he'll run next year for the 17th District Senate seat, which includes Summit, Leoni, Grass Lake and Norvell townships. They make up a small part of a district that also covers Monroe County and part of Washtenaw County.

Schockman, a Democrat, said that if elected, his top priority will be to keep jobs in Michigan.

"My entire platform will be focused on increasing the benefits of the public good -- and that begins by keeping Michigan jobs in Michigan," he said in a statement.

Hammerstrom, R-Temperance, can't run again due to term limits. Sharon Lemasters, the 2002 Democratic nominee for the seat, said she's not running again.

All of the state senate and state rep seats are up for grabs in 2006.

Schockman is in a spot that can make things tough for us. The democrats picked up two Monroe County based state rep districts in the 04 elections, although Bush won Monroe County. Bedford Township was Bush's best area in Monroe. The county is historicaly democrat at the local level and swings at the state level. Over 1/2 of the votes are from Monroe County which is the biggest keys. The dems top area is Pittsfield Twp which is between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti and is solid democrat and becoming more so. The GOP's top area in Summit Township near Jackson.

And I thought my county at 62% did well.

We can use a few Cherokee Counties here to help offset 93% Kerry Detroit.
