We require many fewer folks in the active military these days. However, we should still have UMT sufficient to provide a 100 million man militia, fully armed, and ready to roll.
There was a short period before the big build-up for Nam where you had to re-up for 3 to get OCS. By January 1967, when they had the largest call-up in American history, they'd reduced the requirement.

Remember that little clause in the discharge language about being able to reactivate a veteran if necessary? I'll bet it figures into the logic of this offering
no, not a pilot, but a mechanic for years while enlisted, and then an automotive maintenance tech/support technician as a warrant on just about everything except aviation assets...I always told my pilot friends that I thought I could probably get a bird up in the air- it was getting it back down without the "hard landing" that concerned me a little (just kidding)... thanks for your service...

Sorry to hear that. The induction center your talking about is called MEPS. Its heinous. Are you sure it wasnt in Springfield? If so, it would be the same one i went through.
I guess active duty is much different than National Guard. The National Guard gets certian amount of training slots every year, so i guess being overfilled is not a problem. I got a shipment date guaranteed in my contract. Admittedly, we are pretty ate up on recruitment. I have talked to many recruiters and they say that the biggest problem is all the recruits are going active duty.
Nothing wrong going Infantry. I scored 95th percentile on the ASVAB and got offers for Military Intelligence and all types of goodies, and in the end i still went Infantry and 2 years in I am happy.
3 weeks at Fort Benning and your nephew is happy? I'd say you have a squared away soldier on your hands! (lol!)
Politicians who think they're rulers entitled to tell us how to live and what to do. I'm assuming you don't think politicians are capable of charting the course of your life better than you are, or that they have a moral right to do so.
You need to read the fine print. 15 months of active duty with a total commitment of EIGHT years. The soldier enters active duty, spends 15 months and gets out. A year or so later here is a letter from uncle sugar and he is back to three hots and a cot.

My son was snapped up by the Navy Nuke program and was in Great Lakes within a month of talking to the recruiter. He hadn't felt so wanted since his mom first saw his little mug. Odd story something must have changed in the last 18 months.

Patriotism isn't dying. Americans are dying for a country not our own. That will have a negative effect on recruiting every time.

I'm not sure of the recruiting stats by region, but if you pick up an Army Times magazine (and read it) you'll see that the armed forces are having problems meeting their recruiting goals.
