Oh, man. You're over-thinking this. The answer is 12 ga, obviously. A whole lot more satisfaction, and a lot less trigger-pulling. Duh.

What to buy or what to use on them?

I think rifle would be more fun, but the Mini-14 has accuracy problems when a lot of rounds are put through it.

12GA 00buck. would have a more damaging effect / conversely more soothing on the shooters end.

I believe their is a rifle that is over/under with .223 & 12 ga.

This could be an option. YOu could plink them with .223, and if they got too close, switch to 12 GA. :-)
