I can't find any more details about the case. Given the way Texas juries administer justice, there had to be some extenuating circumstances. My best guess is that the poor little kid was partly to blame for the accident--suddenly darted out into the street or something.
There's no way he would have gotten a suspended sentence otherwise. Not here.

It does not surprise me. While Texas juries are tough on intentional crimes, they are not as tough on alcohol-related offenses.
