Wonder if this means that UselessAir will fly out of SJC again.

The airline industry is beset with fixed costs as well as inefficiencies. They can't raise ticket prices so they have to reduce costs elsewhere. Jet Blue and South West can charge low prices because they don't have an inefficient business model and they skimp on amenities.

These dinosaur airlines owe so much to suppliers, associates, and pensions, that they are beyond broke yet can still squeeze them for enough scratch to pay off politicians. They are a dire threat. The military should temporarily keep them flying while the routes are auctioned off to sucessful businesses like Southwest.

I rather like the current version of America West. I'm afraid all of those bitter US Airways people who have been bumped to the bottom of the seniority list are going to come in and screw up America West's turnaround.

The combined company, which will operate under the name US Airways, will be funded by $1.5 billion in new capital from a variety of investors,

Jeez, did some board member from Pets.com just wake up from a six-year coma? Who would throw their money down this toilet?

including aircraft maker Airbus.

OHHHHHhhhh.

Well, as a retired employee of America West, I'm not really happy, USAirways is a typhoid mary, a crappy airline that destroyed 3 good airlines by merger (Empire, PSA, Piedmont)

Thankfully, the majority of USAirways management are going to be canned, and Doug Parker will run the new airline.

A new name should be created, as USAirways=crappy, incompetent, and loser. I flew on AWA today, my Flight Attendant was very nice and very very junior, she was optimistic, I didn't have the heart to tell her that she has a very small chance of keeping her job, but the Flight Attendants voted in their union, so tough noogies.

On the other hand, my flight bennies should be nice with Honolulu, London, Frankfurt and Paris added to free destinations for me.
