While the storm troopers of doubt circled the beleaguered boxoffice of late, the Force was beginning to flex its power as 20th Century Fox's "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" was shattering records out of the gate with an estimated $16.5 million-to-$17 million in receipts from the midnight shows alone, the distributor said Thursday. "We'll be counting the grosses for a while. It's an absolutely remarkable number. It seems like the industry got kickstarted last night at midnight," said Bruce Snyder, president of domestic distribution for Fox. Snyder noted that final numbers will not be available for some time because midnight shows are not usually broken out of a single day's gross at the boxoffice. "Revenge of the Sith" began playing midnight shows in 2,900 theaters in North America at 12:01 a.m. Thursday. Snyder could not give a firm screen count, but noted that it could be significantly higher because of interlocking, the practice of taking one print and showing it on multiple screens within a theater, and the lack of any other films playing midnight shows on Thursday.
I haven't been to anything but matinees in years. You can get in for $4.75 at an 8 screen theatre next to where I live. I'm going to splurge tommorrow and go to the big digital screen theatre downtown to see Sith. Just $6.75 there.
Oh, I will go see it, but the 330am, 400am, 415am, and 520am showings in Burbank were empty I am told.
It's a flaw in the religion of Unfettered Capitalism, but we're workin' on it. ;o)
Good gravy, what a joke, Medved and movieguide.org have really jumped the shark on this one, both have taken this one line completely out of the context of the scene.
Obi-Wan's line is not a blanket statement about "absolute" judgements of good and evil... it was about the finality of the course Anakin had just taken. Anakin's just come off a killing spree, assault his wife, and has threatened to kill Obi-Wan by stating,"if you are not with me, then you are my enemy."
Heck, the Jedi make blanket "absolute" statements throughout the film... Mace Windu calls Chancellor Palpatine evil, Yoda says Anakin is consumed by Darth Vader, and just a couple of scenes earlier Obi-Wan calls Anakin a threat and hints taht he must kill him... those all sound like "absolute" judgement calls.
I suggest Medved and Movieguide take cue from the MST3K theme song:
"Just repeat to yourself it's just a show you should really just relax."
Yancy
Thanks for the great recap. I miss Peter Cushing!
Early movies at $9 in Burbank....$8.50 if you are a senior...haha.
$10 regular.
well, if they dont recoup the money with this movie, they wont recoup it at all....Hollyweird is tanking this year.
It was more than a recap for me. I didn't realize that there was a midget inside R2D2 (or I had forgotten it entirely).
Just plug your zip code into this and it will tell you if which showings are sold out.

Whoever is downloading this better have peerguard2 installed..
Those that derive life's meaning from "special effects" movies deserve what they get.
And, whatever it is, it is probably superior to what they'd come up with on their own, if anything.
that is INSANE....put in 91505 and look at the theaters at Universal Studios.
Concord Mills costs more than here in the slums.
Dang.
Never underestimate the power of the dark side.
Looks like Spidey's record is toast, I say 121 million for the weekend, 158 for the four day, possibly 44-45 million for one of those days!
The SW movies have always been reductive Zen Bhuddist parables.
I was one of 'em. It was a helluva movie. Nothing will ever match that "first love" of the original, but this came pretty close.
