Interesting. In the movie, he was raped. (The DVD backup makes it clear - they even have Jose Ferrer describing the director's intentions.) I wonder if it's true that he wasn't actually raped in real life.
Actually, if you look on the back page of today's Wall Street Journal, second section, I think, you'll see a terrific review of PHUSA.
Cool. I guess I'll check it out, and do multiple renewals until I get through it. They let me keep "Knowledge and Decisions" for three months, because nobody else in the county wanted it :-).
BTW, I sent Sowell a copy of PHUSA, and he sent me back a copy of his new book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals"---no comment, no card saying thank you. He's an odd guy.
Yes, I get the clear impression that Dr. Sowell is a crank :-). Oh, well. I plan to be a crank when I'm in my 70's, too.
If I like your book (as far as I can tell in 2 weeks) I'll buy it for the Permanent Collection. We don't have a survey history of the US on the shelf.
If you are as smart as Sowell is, you can afford to be a crank.
I might be as smart as Thomas Sowell, but I'm not not as educated. And he's one of the handful where additional education was worthwhile! Maybe I'll catch up in my Declining Years, when my kids are supporting me in the style I deserve :-).
Until then, I've got the library!
The Nefud scenes were filmed in Morocco. The officers club (located in Cairo in the film) is actually the Plaza de España in Sevilla Spain (at least the outdoor scenes).
ARRGH! I guess I asked for that one! I've got another one for you that you've probably heard. I'm allowed to tell it because of being ex-Navy (my disclaimer).
Sailor to Marine: You know, you guys are just a Department of the Navy.
Marine: Yeah, the Men's Department.
Regards,
I thought so, thanks
Thank you. I'll see the movie differently next time.
Aaron Sorkin wrote an amusing exchange between a Marine and a Naval Officer in 'A Few Good Men': The former said to the latter: "I like you Navy boys. Anytime there's some fighting to be done, you guys always give us a ride."
is "buggery" an actual word?
what?...no Pappillon?
Yes.
It was good, but not one of my favs...I did read the book the year it hit paperback...an impressive story.
"...so long as the Arabs fight tribe against tribe, so long will they be a little people, a silly people, greedy, barbarous, and cruel, as you are."
While it may not be historically accurate, it is a great flick.
Where did this phrase appear:
"In submitting to the Bey, I gave away the only gift we are born into the world with: our bodily integrity..."
In 1965 I read that the Bey, nearly 90, visited the U.S. to denounce the rape scene and how Turks were depicted generally.
Is it not true that the Turkish flag shown in the movie, with crescent and star on a red background, did not exist prior to the creation of the Turkish republic by Kemal Ataturk, in scenes depicting the Arab Revolt 1915-1918?
Re: "...the British approached Sherif Husein, a direct descendant of Mohammed, who also ruled Mecca, and encouraged him to revolt."
"...a direct descendant of Mohammed..." eh?
I guess we can tell which side of the bread James Barr butters...
