WASHINGTON She may be able to hang a giant Lone Star flag outside her office, but Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said today there's one part of her Texas culture she couldn't bring to the nation's capital her handgun.
Hutchison said she didn't know when she arrived from Austin in 1993 that the District of Columbia prohibits keeping a fully assembled handgun in the home. The district's ban has been in place since 1975.
Hutchison, a Republican who is considering a 2006 run for Texas governor, introduced legislation today to lift the ban. If the bill passes she said she would keep a gun in her D.C. home.
Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and George Allen, R-Va., are co-sponsors.
"I have always had a handgun in the drawer next to my bed, and I would certainly again have one if it were legal in D.C.," Hutchison said.
Her office said her handgun is a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver.
Hutchison said after she learned of the D.C. gun ban, she dismantled her gun, bought a travel case for it and took it back to Texas. She said she's complying with the law even though she thinks it's unconstitutional.
"I think every woman in the District of Columbia should have the ability to protect herself in her home," she said.
Hutchison previously served as chair of the Appropriations subcommittee that oversees funding for the District of Columbia.
A similar attempt at repealing D.C.'s gun ban failed last year. Hutchison lends the clout of a member of the Republican leadership she is the vice-chair of the Republican Conference and her measure has 25 co-sponsors
I wish she was a lot more fiscally conservative, but even with that she's a damn sight more "conservative" than Perry.

TEN WORST LARGEST CITIES FOR MURDER, 2002
CITY PER 100,000
(1) Washington, DC 45.8
(2) Detroit 42.0
(3) Baltimore 38.3
(4) Memphis 24.7
(5) Chicago 22.2
(6) Philadelphia 19.0
(7) Columbus 18.1
(8) Milwaukee 18.0
(9) Los Angeles 17.5
(10) Dallas 15.8
The chance of being murdered in Washington, DC in 1990 was 3 times greater than the chance of an American soldier being killed in the Gulf War
She THINKS it's unconstitutional? Let's try it MOST DEFINITELY IS unconstitutional - even though the courts don't have the guts to say it.
But this also shows how many issues don't matter to our "leaders" unless it directly affects them. This is just another proof of that.
Why not on the streets?
Even Mrs. Reagan was not allowed to bring her .38 revovler to the white house. She said in an interview once, that she used to keep a .38 in the dresser next to her bed, before she moved to the white house.
Hey, if it's unconstitutional, DON'T COMPLY WITH IT! Darn Kay, how long have you been a Senator now?? Sheesh.
It's been said countless times: Better to be tried by 12 than carried by six.
What about every man? What about outside the home?
tougher than the grandma with lots of names.
Never underestimate grandmas!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm open. Anybody but Perry.
It's not clear that she's running for Governor. She hasn't ruled it out, but the GOP is offering her a senate leadership position if she stays.
And if you'd support Strayhorn over Perry, you should be shot.
And presumably, she should then never leave her home?
What's wrong with having the ability to defend yourself wherEVER you go?
"And if you'd support Strayhorn over Perry, you should be shot."
Maybe Kay Bailey can do it with her six-shooter. ;-D
I'd prefer to be in a foxhole with KBH than with "one tough grandma." Strayhorn is only good at shooting off her mouth.
"Strayhorn is only good at shooting off her mouth."
Agreed. I believe that's a trait often found both in Austin and Washington.
I gained too many gray hairs during the election last fall. I intend to sit back and enjoy wild and wooly Texas politics for a while before getting serious and involved again next year. So chill for a while, Dog. Might as well have a little fun with the preliminary scuffle til the dust settles and we know who's actually in the fight.
Houston/Texas PING
For all you guys out there who call her a RINO, note that her name NEVER shows up in the list of 10 or so wavering Republicans in the Senate on the filibuster issue.
Say what you want about other issues, especially abortion, but KBH will NEVER prevent a solid conservative from getting on the Supreme Court (or any other court) - and if I supported Roe (which I sure as heck don't), I wouldn't even waste my time talking to her about keeping people off of the courts - she's right there with the mainstream conservatives.
And she hates toll roads - so I want her as gov.
If she is so strong in the Senate, perhaps she is better off there. Not to say that she couldn't make a decent governor, just everyone has a role to play.
I'll feel a little more comfortable after some Supreme Court nominees get approved.
Note I said SC, these current judicial nominees are nothing compared the outrages that the Democrats will try when Rehnquist and others leave.
