MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian village was left baffled Thursday after its lake disappeared overnight.
NTV television showed pictures of a giant muddy hole bathed in summer sun, while fishermen from the village of Bolotnikovo looked on disconsolately.
"It is very dangerous. If a person had been in this disaster, he would have had almost no chance of survival. The trees flew downwards, under the ground," said Dmitry Zaitsev, a local Emergencies Ministry official interviewed by the channel.
Officials in Nizhegorodskaya region, on the Volga river east of Moscow, said water in the lake might have been sucked down into an underground water-course or cave system, but some villagers had more sinister explanations.
"I am thinking, well, America has finally got to us," said one old woman, as she sat on the ground outside her house.

Damn that evil BushHitler!
Yes, and then we are going to come back for the moon as well.
Silly woman. Doesn't she know that a camel's sitting on the lake, which is why she can't see it. Sheesh.
Just think how the muslims are gonna freak when we steal the moon. Their demon-god won't have a place to live.
It was "Team America" lady, get it right or we'll kick your commie butt! We needed the water to kick some terrorist butt!
If I was a lake, I'd rather be in America. Maybe it just ran away from home......
I didn't do it. Nobody saw me. You can't prove anything.
I believe you - can I have my pump back now?
Are the Russians conducting LSD experiments?
"I am thinking, well, America has finally got to us," said one old woman, as she sat on the ground outside her house.
Yep....we're Americans, and we can do anything.
Woe! Lake be gone!
Bush did it!
I was thinking the same thing.
This was on either TLC or Modern Marvels. It was so wacky and amazingly no one was killed in this disaster. I believe the current was so strong that it actually made the major river there flow in the opposite direction. Watching the videos of it is totally nutz!
Wouldn't those be former fishermen?
"Monty, we made that Russian lake disappear just like that!"
"Excellent, my boy, excellent!"
I saw that on the History channel last night, the boats looked like toys in a bathtub getting sucked down the drain. It had to be quite a force to reverse the flow of the mighty Mississippi for any length of time.
Something like this happened in Louisiana years ago. An oil drilling rig in a large lake punched a hole through a salt dome, within minutes the lake was sucked into the dome, pulling in boats, houses, etc. Many people were fishing in the lake when this happened but I believe that all managed to escape.
