'Morning, Dolly. Hope you have a grand day at the movies.

I shall never forget seeing the first(fourth) Star Wars movie in 1977. I don't know how many of you remember the movies made in the '70s. They were all morose, depressing, preachy, no right or wrong/good or bad, nihilist, all were just plain awful. Then along came Star Wars and just in time!

I had had thyroid cancer 5 years before and had surgery to remove the tumor then. Now, in 1977, after being married just a year, another tumor on the remnants of the thyroid had appeared. The day before surgery I was a bit down so Mr.Lakeside suggested going to a movie. It was Star Wars. It was total escapist, total fun, and for that short while I totally forgot about hospital, needles, knives and pain.(the tumor turned out to be benign. yay!)

Also, unbeknownst to us I was pregnant with our first son. Now, I don't know if the old wives tale of 'imprinting' on the unborn is true but that son is an enthusiastic fan of Star Wars to this day. And yes, we had all the toys and action figures and even the Star Wars Legos.

As for me, I'm going to wait for the dvd as my 'going to the movie' days are pretty much over. No problem, we've got a big screen t.v. with a very good home theater surround sound system. :o)

finished the little bit of front lawn that needed to be done.. thanks for your story.. glad your cancer problem was corrected & you are a 30 year survivor! WOW. We often don't know of all the things are friends here have gone through.

Even if you miss a few days, you can miss some "news" or some "sharing". Like the Finest Folks who are NOT Star Wars fans, might skip today's thread & miss some news. That is why I try to scan each day, even if the topic isn't one of my "hot" buttons.

I have a big screen TV (projection type) and it is much better than small, but to me NOT the same as big screen ... sound, pix, etc. for many movies it doesn't make a big difference.. but the ones with special effects, the epics etc, I love at theater. But I also know various circumstances make it difficult. We have bargain matinees here for 4.00 at the finest theaters in the area (Cinemark) and for me they are the two closest theaters to boot!

I agree with you re: the escapist element to these movies.. over the years they also have been a great tool in Church youth groups for discussion on the course of evil and the fight against it.

and star wars Lego's.. wow, I had forgotten about those..yes, Jeff had those also. I wish I had taken more pix of Jeff with his Star wars "things".. I have always been a photography nut but for some reason don't think I have any of this..

some other toys...

Someone's collection of ships & weaponry
