It was okay for the father, but not the mother. Patriachal to a fault.

Hey I love this story. I hate favoritism toward men and boys.

Even many parents and moms favor the boys over the girls. Makes me sick.

Is it any wonder that men become so macho.

Boys are stupid. : D

hmm...At least she didn't abort it. Then again it's a private school and you have to play by their rules.

I applaud her for going through with the pregnancy...while I understand the pressure the school was probably under to keep a pregant, unwed teen out of sight on graduation day, I think that if we really want to show that we respect life we need to repect even unwed mothers...she may have made a mistake but her courage is admirable IMHO...shame/ shunning is not very Christian.

Her mother was unapologetic, saying: "She deserved to walk, and she did."

Once again the "I deserve it" takes precendent over rules. Kids today are taught by lesson and example if you think you deserve something it doesn't matter whether there is a law or rule against it, go get it.

My education is the most important thing to me. The way I receive my education shouldn't change just because I am pregnant," said Cosby, "I've been on the honor roll pretty much through high school, and I have worked really hard to get to this point, I just don't want to be denied the chance to walk with my class because I am pregnant."

I heard a statistic quoted once by Dr. Laura (I think), that if a girl does three things, she has a 90% chance of not living in poverty, they are:

1. Graduate from high school
2. Don't get pregnant, until you graduate.
3. Marry the father of your child.

some at last night's ceremony considered her move in poor taste

We'll see how far she gets through life making her own rules as she goes along.

She's lucky she got to stay at that school. We had a girl get pregnant at our school (Jewish) and she was immediately asked to leave.

She really thinks that if a few of the other inmates cheer that it justifies her action? Sheesh. Looks like wisdom did in fact prevail in this case.

Well.....if they'd gotten MARRIED.....it would have been different, but I agree.....the guy should NOT be participating EITHER! There are CONSEQUENCES to life's decisions.....rewarding bad decisions, gets you.....more BAD DECISIONS!

I went to a public school in Texas and the few girls that did get pregnant were sent to another school with other pregnant girls from around the area. What this girl did isn't anything to applaud. Those that say otherwise are part of the problem. We've eradicated shame from our society so that now everything from homosexuality and teen pregnancy to adultery and divorce is perfectly acceptable.

What's done is done, but there's nothing to gain in applauding disgraceful behavior.

So does the rule apply to:

Students who are known to have had sex but didn't get pregnant?

Girls who are known to have gotten pregnant but were suddenly not pregnant later on?

Or just the girls who get pregnant and stay that way to term?

Private school private rules.

Graduation comencement signifies accomplishment.

She only managed to accomplish spreading her legs.

Perhaps they could have banned the father too, but private school private rules.

She had to flaunt her failure.

Normally I stick up for the institution's decision, but in this case, I applaud the girl for what she did. That took some courage. My daughter was in the same fix 20 years ago and had to go to a separate public school and could not be with her graduating class. Not one to make waves, and coming from a different generation, I was just glad she got her diploma.

This morning a lady called in a local show at the last minute and I would have liked for her to have been able to talk longer. She told what it was like being pregnant back in the 40's or 50's and how the fathers didn't have any stigma and how hard it was for the girls.

The church is the one who, rightfully, condemns abortion. They need to stand behind sinners in their midst. They do just about every other kind of sinner, but I guess this one "sticks" out too much.

There are worse cases I won't go into, but it isn't right.

Here's St. Jude Educational website

The article originally appeared in the Montgomery Advertiser, but it isn't online any more. Found this much in the cached copy, retrieved by google crawler May 19, 2005:

"Pregnant student banned from graduation walks stage anyway Alysha Cosby waited four years to hear her name called at her high school graduation. When it wasn't, she took matters into her own hands."
