Something similar happened to Patton. In his diary he recorded a day where he was transiting a road by car when a German artillery position started lobbing shells. The shells got closer and closer to the car. The third shell ended up exploding about 40 yards away. The fourth and last landed just beside the passing car, two feet from the running board, the mud splattering the General.
It was a dud.
Amazing.
