The Jews believed God was appeased by obedience to rules. Once God established a set of rules, the Rabbis needed to "clarify" them for every day living. This is the result...Religion by committee. Actually the prohibition on making a fire on the Sabbath is a Commandment, not Rabbinical in nature.

Actually the prohibition on making a fire on the Sabbath is a CommandmentI don't think so. The committee came up with "fire = work". At least I didn't find a reference to fire as work in Leviticus or Deuteronomy.
