The Wireless Foundation and the membership of CTIA-The Wireless Association™ have partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to deliver AMBER Alerts to wireless phones.

AMBER Alerts
Statistics show the first three hours after abduction are most critical to recovery efforts. Recognizing that wireless technology can help galvanize more than 182-million wireless consumers to assist law enforcement in the search for and return of a child, CTIA- The Wireless Association™, its members and The Wireless Foundation are proud to launch the Wireless AMBER Alerts™ Initiative.

The wireless industry has officially partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) (NCMEC) to distribute AMBER Alerts to wireless consumers who opt in to receive geographically specified messages on their wireless devices through an AMBER Alert wireless messaging system.

Subscribers capable of receiving text messages, and whose wireless carrier participates in the Wireless AMBER Alerts Initiative, may opt in to receive alerts by registering at http://www.wirelessamberalerts.org or their wireless carrier's website. Users can designate up to five ZIP codes from which they'd like to be alerted in the case of an AMBER Alert activation.

The Wireless AMBER Alerts program is powered by Syniverse Technologies.

I have challenged my friends and family to add this to their cellular phones, I am confident that you will not receive thousands of Amber Alerts, abusing the system instead I am confident that they feel this program will help find our missing children.

I doubt you will receive thousands... it is zip code driven and I know they don't want to burn out people to the system.. plus a lot of wireless carriers charge per text message..

The providers could and should be able to permit these broadcasts (which would serve a whole block of subscribers, not single users) for free.

I do not like the sound of this. It sounds like the nose of the cow to me.

It certainly would be doable. If carriers can provide free 911 calls then why not free Amber Alert txt messages.

Fahrenheit 451

"everyone look outside for a man running..NOW"

Cellphones users already call in many reports of vicous criminal parents with child in vehichle, not buckled in carseat, child being beaten(spanked) by parent , person with possibe or real gun ( soccer moms go nuts seeing someone putting hunting gear in car). This area once sported pickup truck back window gun racks but such would be inviting police harassment now;too many city folks moved to the country and demanded successfully that the country change.

You can't openly exercise freedoms anymore ,you have to stay under the radar of the nearest Ms. Busybody. Not that finding persons of any age who have been taken into real danger isn't a desirable thing. Many children are part of disputes between familes and not in danger. If the Amber alerts were used only for non-custodial takings it would be better. Insert story of boy and wolf...

Amen. I get the same mailings most do. "Have you seen me". Ever notice how often the adult has the same last name as the child in question? Based on the information provided I have no clue if the notice is justified or a divorce that has gotten ugly.

I do not wish to be co-opted in the power struggles of families that are made up of people who put themselves first foremost and always. People who ruin their lives, their families and they will start on yours if that have half a chance.

No thank you. No fault divorce was a giant mistake.

So was no-fault auto accident policies;both shift the burden unfairly to those who were not at fault. Socialism rewards poor choices.
