Kweisi Mfume admits dating a subordinate

BALTIMORE - U.S. Senate candidate Kweisi Mfume said having a romantic relationship with a subordinate while heading the NAACP was a "boneheaded thing to do."

Mfume, who is divorced, has previously admitted dating the woman in 1997 and adopting her son. But he denied that any of his personnel decisions were affected by the relationship.

"I'm a human being," Mfume said Monday of the relationship. "It was very short-lived and terminated because I recognized it was a boneheaded thing to do. It was my mistake and my mistake solely. That's what makes us better as human beings. Not to repeat mistakes ... and to try to own up to them."

An internal memo from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People outlined alleged claims that a woman who once worked at the civil rights organization had threatened to sue over Mfume's relationship with a subordinate.

Mfume said he hoped the allegations would not hurt his Senate chances.

"This whole issue of doubt in the minds of people is a natural reaction," Mfume told reporters in downtown Baltimore. "You can't run and you can't hide, so I don't try ... The more I talk about it, the better I feel."

Mfume, who served five terms in Congress, joins 10-term Rep. Benjamin Cardin and civic activist A. Robert Kaufman in the Democratic hunt for the seat held by retiring Sen. Paul Sarbanes. On the Republican side, Lt. Gov. Michael Steele has said he is seriously considering a run.

"I have every intention of being there for the November election," Mfume said.

Internal NAACP documents indicate rumors of several women.

Since he's done this long & strong, how many different times will we have to hear this story ?...of course only the names and dates will change.

It will probably become a MS-WORD template.

He doesn't repeat mistakes? Isn't this the guy who has kids with about 5 different mothers and wasn't married to a single one?

In his younger days had those 5 kids by 3 or 4 mothers, he did not support them, they all collected welfare. His real name is Frisell Gray. This was in a NY Times Sunday Magaine of about 9 years ago.

Yes, but in fairness, I believe this was before he was a public figure, and I do know he's finnantially supported them all.

Just giving the man his due.
