I also like This Island Earth. Guys with oversized foreheads trying to look like Earthlings. As for Lucas, in the future, hire a screenwriter he must.

Mamet?

He has high points but can be damned stilted (The Winslow Boy)

His wife is quite handsome though.

(both big lefties sadly)

I saw that when I was in the hospital. Cool effects for the day.

But if she were . . .

I was hoping it was true. Really hoping. That would have made this film a real knockout.

His work is better directed by others.

Kind of like Sec. of State Albright being concerned that the US is the world's only superpower.

Thats probably as good as an example as one can get.

The cheapo 50s sci-fi flicks are great.

I saw Planet of the Vampires a year or so ago. Definitely another creepy sci-fi flick. Though I don't remember it looking too "cheapo." It was pretty good in a way.

The title should say Star Wars III, Star Wars VI has been around for many years.

This Island Earth...I'm gonna have to find that one. I just looked at the cover picture on Amazon. It looks exquisitely corny.

What about The Incredible Shrinking Man? I haven't seen that one in years but I remember thinking it was pretty darned good. Older science fiction movies and older comic books strike me as having more imagination even though today's effects are obviously extraordinary.

yeah. spielberg has made his money on his movies. lucas has made his money on videogames, books, and action figures based on his movies, and with licensing deals for the use of his technologies in other movies(ILM).

A Boy and His Dog is the hands down best SF movie ever made. The ending alone is worth the price of rental (if you can find it).

I have'nt paid to see a SW movie sense 'Empire'.

I liked Spanish Prisoner.....he directs like his dialogue...a play.

Ronin I liked a lot....but that was Frankenheimer directed as you pointed out.

And any flick with Jean Reno, De Niro, Skarsgard, Pryce, Natasha McElhone, and Michael Lonsdale has to at least be entertaining.

That's a terrific film! Ever read the Harlan Ellison novella?

It pains me too.
All the years, the unlimited money and technology- and Lucas, himself, is so limited we get the PT.
It's so sad. There was no reason for it at all. No excuses.
I am reminded of a quote by Lucas- years ago, warning filmmakers who would copy SW.
" The special effects are not the story. The STORY is the story." And his taste is so juvenile, that he thinks what he writes( even after admitting he's no good at it) IS a good story!
He's a filmmaker, not a writer. Whatever ideas he had should have been worked on by a real, competent, adult script writer.
To hear that he hates dialog and scripts is sad. It is also why he is so successful.
In the intervening years the audience has been dumbed down to the point where dialog and scripts don't matter. It's the perfect recipe for success.
What shame. The PT could have had it all. Incredible special effects AND an incredible story/script.
It didn't because of the basic limitations of Lucas himself.
Another ' what if' for history.

In particular the film of 'Glengarry Glen Ross' is astonishingly good. In James Foley's other movies his style is overheated and tiresome. As Mamet's dialogue can be flat and stilted under his own direction. This was a perfect mix of screenplay and director.

"It’s still a tossup with Ewok Adventure,"

It doesn't get anymore damning than that.
What about the stalk eyed Jamaican mule, is he in this one
