Star Wars are the most overrated gaggle of movies ever made. There is almost nothing which makes sense or is of much interest in any of them. Only the first Star Trek movie can compete for the title of Dumbest Movies EVER.
And I like Science fiction movies. None of these come close to War of the Worlds or Forbidden Planet for starters.

Episodes IV-V-VI captured the feel of old movie serials like Flash Gordon. IMHO that's what made them great. There was no soul searching you knew who the good guys were and who the bad guys were and they fought it out. The plot twists were subtle but tied in well with the story as a whole.
Episodes I-II lacked ALL OF THAT. They seemed like a 100 level film school exercise. Although the CGI was incredible, at times it went way over the top. Many times during both films I was asking myself how the heck is he gonna swing this vast extravagant universe into the close barren one familiar to everyone from IV-V-VI.
Was George really trying to close out the trilogy or did he sacrifice the storyline to show us what big toys he has?

But the Darth Vader we see at the end of Revenge of the Sith hasn't been seduced. He's been tricked. He's not a villain. He's a schmuck. Disturbing, this is...

Decieving us you are! Lies, treachery, these lead to the DARK SIDE!

I was willing to suspend disbelief and go see it until I read this. Now I could never keep from bursting out laughing when this dialog comes up. I wouldn't want to spoil it for the true believers.

The Case for the Empire STAR WARS RETURNS today with its fifth installment, "Attack of the Clones." There will be talk of the Force and the Dark Side and the epic morality of George Lucas's series. But the truth is that from the beginning, Lucas confused the good guys with the bad. The deep lesson of Star Wars is that the Empire is good. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/001/248ipzbt.asp

Thanks for the link! Mr. Spock showing up was a nice touch!
One of the strange but true issues in the world of sci-fi is the deep, powerful and mutual disdain that Trekkies and Star Wars fanatics have for each other.
You can have your Jedi, I'll take Spock over Yoda any day of the week...

Don't try to frighten us with your review, Lord Podhoretz. Your sad devotion to script and plot has not helped you conjure up box office receipts, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the a good recipe for Ewoks...

Forbidden Planet really IS something isn't it? I've never seen anything quite like it. There's something about it that works in a creepy dream sort of way. I regard it more highly than the more talked about The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I'll still go see the freak show, the liberals in their Star Wars outfits will cause me incredible fits of laughter. All the while I'll be thinking of Triumph's insults...

Basing it on Shakespeare doesn't hurt. And it is more frightening than most SF.

The problem is that Vader never was a superior villain. He never tried to vanquish The Emperor... He was a different kind of villian. The nature of the Force would not permit him to vanquish The Emperor.
From "Return of The Jedi":
Skywalker: "Release me. I can sense the good in you even now."
Vader: "You don't know the powerrr of the Dark Side. I must obey my Master."
This is why his ultimate rebellion against The Empreror near the end of the film was such a big deal. It simply wasn't enough for him to admit that there was still some good within him. He had to deny all that he was and had been for the last 20 years to be able to even entertain the thought of rebelling against his Master.

"I don't like writing, and I don't like scripts."
Apparently a lot of producers and directors feel the same way, which probably accounts for the banality of so many of today's movies.
