MEXICO CITY -- President Vicente Fox refused to apologize Monday for saying Mexicans in the United States do the work that blacks won't — a comment widely viewed as acceptable in a country where blackface comedy is still considered funny and nicknames often reflect skin color.
State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City had raised the issue with the Mexican government. "That's a very insensitive and inappropriate way to phrase this and we would hope that (the Mexicans) would clarify the remarks if they have a chance," Boucher said.
Fox's spokesman, Ruben Aguilar, said Mexican and foreign news media have misinterpreted the remark as a racial slur. He said the president was speaking in defense of Mexican migrants as they come under attack by the new U.S. immigration measures that include a wall along the U.S.-California border.
Stung by the U.S. crackdown on illegal immigrants, many Mexicans — including Mexico City's archbishop — said Fox was just stating a fact.

C'mon down to west central Florida some time, especially St. Pete. Many many self-employed African-American "landscapers" (as we prefer to call lawncutters in these parts). OTOH, I'm seeing lots and lots more Hispanic (presumably Mexican) construction crews (who are, ahem, not self-employed, at least for the most part).

That's not true.
There are both lazy and industrious people of every race and skin color, and that includes Hispanics and blacks. The idea some folks have, that Mexicans are all hard working folks who will gladly do any kind of menial task, is in itself somewhat racist.

Despite growing criticism that included a stern U.S. response, Fox had repeatedly refused to back away from the comments he made Friday, saying his remark had been misinterpreted.
But in telephone conversations with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton, the president said he "regretted" the statement.

I haven't followed this thread. Fox should have used common sense and watched what he said but that would be 'uncommon' in this day and time.

I have to agree with you. Now all Mexicans are industrious. Some are just plain lazy.
What the NAACP and Jesse Jackson need to do is go to Mexico and ask why there are no blacks on Mexican television. I don't think I have ever seen a black on Mexican TV. As a matter of fact, the Mexicans seen on TV are very white.

I am beginning to hate Mexico and everything associated with it over the ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION issue alone.
It make me sick and I have sent the RNC 50 emails on the subject telling them they can kiss my conservative butt. my vote, and my checkbook goodbye if they don't get this straight.
I gave the max to Bush campaign last year and even tried to support his guest worker plan as being a first step to a solution. That got me flamed alot but I'm tough.
The problem won't solve itself and there are areas where armed revolt is near at hand.

Well hold on now, while many intelligent and sane people in America understand that, it IS the representation that gets dispersed out en masse. Your complaint is better directed at say, the black owned institution called BET, which misrepresents the black community everyday...close to 24 hours a day. Yet I never see or hear of any person or group in the black community lodge any complaints (or I dare say boycotts) of BET because of their misrepresentation; I suppose they don't want to stem the revenue for a successful black owned company. That either lends me to believe that those misrepresentations are reality or that we're dealing with alot of hypocritical people looking after "their own".
