I have read all the posts on this thread. One thing bothers me. Not Lukas, not his politics, not StarWars. The thing that bothers me is the lack of acceptance of dissent. Ok, so according to the article Lukas likens Darth to GWB (though I doubt he actually does), and our FR brethen are shouting from the roof-tops about dissent by a fellow American. Come on folks...we are bigger than that. Now, burning NewsWeek to the ground...count me in on that.
"I have read all the posts on this thread. One thing bothers me. Not Lukas, not his politics, not StarWars. The thing that bothers me is the lack of acceptance of dissent."
idiocy is not dissent. If someone screamed "light sabre!" in a theater, it would be Bush's fault. The only parallel in Lucas's statement is that it parallel's other hollywood idiocy. If it wasn't idiocy it wouldn't have made the MSM or this post. It is when people try to rationalize the idiocy does idiocy truly become idiocy.
There is a quote in the book "Labyrinth of Evil" (prequel story to the new movie) that makes a reference to the "Triad of Evil." It refers to the Republic's enemies. At the time the Republic is under the leadership of Palpatine. Soon to become Emperor Palpatine. That is the correct Bush comparison, not to Vader.
The lack of acceptance to dissent is disturbing to say the least. Dissent is what helps to define a democracy.
It's not lack of acceptance of dissent on my part.
It's MISPLACED dissent.
When ANY film that is not set in contemporary times brings in contemporary political commentary it RUINS the feel of the film.
SW is about a 'galaxy far, far away', not 'now'. Not ' us'.
If you want to get preached to( from whatever side) you go to documentaries. If you want fantasy entertainment that takes you AWAY from here and now, SW promises to be that. That's the main premise. To interject jabs at current politics breaks that fantasy,IMO.
I've been a SW fan for over 20 years- and I'll say it again.
In the beginning, Lucas served the story. It was bigger than him. Now he's bigger than it- and it serves his marketing division and corporation.
IF it is also used as his personal pulpit for political,
liberal commentary he ends it all by having ruined his own reputation. He's had his final say.
How Star Wars is thought of now will be up to the public and the culture.
seriously man, watch some of the threads. people both on FR and DU go out of their way to get offended over ANYTHING!!
Remember the roast Laura Bush did about the President a couple weeks back? There were 2 or 3 threads that had damn near 1000 posts to it.....mainly by people that thought it was a horse masterbation joke....
Lucas can dissent all he wants, but we're not going to pay $16.00 plus snacks to watch him do it.
MY dissent is just as worthy as his, ...or don't you agree with that?
