Man Charged in Fla. Death Tries to Escape

May 15, 2005 5:45 PM EDT

TAMPA, Fla. - The sex offender accused of killing 13-year-old Sarah Lunde was caught trying to dig a way out of his jail cell, officials said.

A Hillsborough County jail deputy heard scratching noises coming from David Onstott's cell around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, said sheriff's office spokeswoman Debbie Carter.

Onstott, 36, was found scratching on the concrete wall near the floor next to his bunk with a metal towel holder he had apparently pried off the desk in his cell, Carter said.

He used the towel holder as a digging tool and had scraped a quarter of an inch into the concrete, she said. Carter said Onstott was alone in the cell, and has been moved to another one-person cell in the jail.

Onstott allegedly told police he choked Sarah in an argument and dumped her body in a pond near the girl's Ruskin home on April 10.

Onstott is charged with first-degree murder and attempted sexual battery; he has pleaded not guilty. No additional charges have been filed, Carter said.

Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty if Onstott is convicted of first-degree murder.

The massive, weeklong search for Lunde captured the nation's attention last month before her partially clothed body was found April 16 in an abandoned fish pond near her family's mobile home in Ruskin. She was last seen April 9 after returning home from a church trip.

Authorities said Onstott confessed to strangling Sarah after showing up at the house early the next morning looking for the girl's mother, Kelly May, whom he had once dated. He allegedly told investigators that he killed Sarah after the two got into an argument.

Onstott served 5 1/2 years in prison for a 1995 rape and was arrested in March on a charge of failing to register as a sex offender.

That's a quarter of an inch closer to hell for you, criminal.

Only another 11.75 inches to go through solid concrete and he would have been a free man.

That's desperation.

Let this story be a reminder to anyone who ever serves on a jury and has to decide whether to recommend a sentence of life in prison or the death penalty. Criminals can escape from prison, but they can't escape after they're finally dead.

Out in California, the jury is still out on whether Samantha Runnion's killer gets the death penalty. If that jury goes soft, it will be a crime against humanity and a slap in the face of every child in this country.

Not to mention the steel reinforcements in the concrete and the unknown distance he would have to tunnel under the concrete to the outside of the building.

They should have let him dig his way out and then shot him outside the fence. Problem solved.

Cowardly bass-turd. He can do dispicable things to a little girl but can't face the consequences. The planet needs to be rid of this pathetic scum.

Weld the bars shut. feed him inside his cell. When he dies, fill the cell with concrete. These people should never get out, but I wouldn't give them the attention that they would garner if they were executed.

In a perfect world, he wouldn't have been alive to escape OR kill that poor girl -- he would have been sent to the firing squad after the FIRST offense.
