When he presented his budget proposal Friday afternoon, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he had a good feeling about how it would be received in the Legislature.
"I don't know if it's just my positive thinking, but I had a dream yesterday that I had the speaker and the (Senate) president pro tem come down to my office, knock on the door ... and say, 'Governor, we have no changes. This is absolutely perfect.'
"I don't know if this dream will become reality, but a lot of times my dreams do become reality. I don't know, so let's just hope for the best."
Arden Fair Mall If he stayed around a little longer at the state office building where he unveiled his spending plan, the Republican governor would have known in minutes that his dream wouldn't come true.
Democrats, including Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, D-Los Angeles, met reporters in another room and blasted Schwarzenegger's budget, making it clear they're in no mood to approve it anytime soon.
"This budget is a sham," Núñez said. "It reflects the governor's values, and unfortunately the governor's values remain totally out of sync with the values of working-class and middle-class Californians, particularly where it concerns education."
Some political experts suggest Schwarzenegger may also be dreaming if he thinks a protracted budget fight, which seems to be a possibility given the rhetoric Friday, can be turned into campaign fodder in his threat to seek voter approval of a strict new spending-control measure.
Although Schwarzenegger expressed "hope" Friday that the two issues wouldn't become linked, his aides have been saying for some time in private that a delayed budget plays right into Schwarzenegger's hands.
