My wife and I are interested in getting him something that might be useful to him at boot camp.

I wouldn't do that. Recruits are stripped naked, heads shaved, skivvies, boots, socks, covers, cammies, and M16s issued, and that's it (aside from Brasso, boot polish, and miscellaneous hygiene items, etc). But whatever you give him will end up in storage with his civilian clothes until he graduates. In third phase, the recruits get a chance to go to the PX. Other than that, forget it. Nice thought, though.

I had a birthday while at Parris Island and my mother sent me a tin of cookies.

Best gift as others have said is to send him lots of letters telling him how proud of him and supporting him.

He may have second thoughts once he is in. That is the time to tell him of your love and encourage him to stick it out.

Send chocolate, but no more than 30 pieces. That way he won't have to share because he won't have enough for everybody. The DI's love candy gifts from home!!
Spray perfume on all your letters to him.
Send his baby pictures to his Senior DI.
Try to visit him once a week.
Address his letters as General, not Pvt.
Send fluffy night slippers special delivery !!
Send pink headbands.
Send Scooby-doo pictured stationary with stamped self-addressed envelopes.
Send post cards with a lot of XXXXXX's below your signature and an explanation as to why the NAVY would have been a better choice!
Send him his entire comic book collection.
On a post card tell him the statue of Iron Mike is melting.
A short letter to his DI about his tender ego and jock itch.

Do NOT send him a birthday card if he has a birthday while in boot camp.

One of my brothers was stupid enough to do this while I was in boot camp. Anything that does not look like a regular letter gets opened in front of the drill instructor. A birthday card invites extra pushups and so on.

If you do send him a birthday card you will be committing a stupid act, not a loving act.

The Drill Instructors at P.I. show NO MERCY to the little boys that get "gifts" from mommy or whomever....

I could imagine the Squad Bay at mail call -- when the poor puke was forced to open his CARE package in front of the entire platoon and be ordered to explain the Fluffy Pink bedroom slippers and Pink headband....

That poor puke would be known as "Pinky" the rest of his natural life!

The best gift I got in boot camp was when my mom sent me a care package with enough candy bars to treat the whole platoon. I was the hero for the day.

Letters were delightful for me...but the "she's" are different.

When I was younger; and had a sweetie in basic, I sent something which was a hit. HOWEVER, it was a hit because his girlfriend--not an aunt--sent it. Have a sweet chickadee send him this:

Chocolate chip cookies--with a twist.

Before I baked the cookies, I put little notes in many of them (They don't burn). On the notes I put private little things.

At the time, I had no idea that sharing them with all in the bay was the way of things. Apparently, the cookies were a huge hit with the guys.

The best story, I heard about was this one: One guy believed his note was more than a tease--he was prepared to "MEET ME IN THE SHOWERS AT MIDNIGHT."

I think what my friend liked the most about the odd things I sent him was that he felt special with their receipt. I was young, so I sent things I guess I'm embarrassed about now...there was more teasing back then than now--I think.

I also sent him cards I'd made from cutting the letters out of magazines and writing sweetheart messages which looked like RANSOM notes. I wrote a number of these. One was a series. The first one was a small collage of some lovely young hands of lovely young ladies. The second was, I believe made of lovely-young-ladies' eyes--and the card was larger. Next was a larger card of legs. Next was a pretty large card of a collage of hips. The last was a poster-collage of breasts (IN BATHING SUITS!!).

My friend seemed to enjoy this attention.
