HILLARY GETS IT. Hillary Clinton says she's against illegal immigration. And she would fine employers who hire illegal aliens.
Pundits say the New York Democrat is using this hot-button issue to position herself for the 2008 presidential election. It's a way to hit Republicans from the right. Polls show huge majorities of both Republicans and Democrats oppose illegal immigration -- and are frustrated that President Bush won't do a thing to stop it.
But this issue does not belong to the right. Or it shouldn't. Illegal immigration hurts most liberal causes. It depresses wages, crushes unions and kills all hope for universal health coverage. Progressives have to understand that there's little social justice in an unregulated labor market.
"Liberals are so confused on this issue," says Vernon Briggs, a labor economist at Cornell University and self-described liberal. "Immigration policy has got to be held accountable for its economic consequences."
Many Democrats used to get it. In 1964, President Johnson abolished the Bracero program, which brought in "temporary" farm workers from Mexico. Its demise let Cesar Chavez organize U.S. farm workers. His union won some battles early on, but a new wave of illegal immigrants in the mid-1970s reversed that progress. The union barely exists today.

Nowadays, the messages aren't even mixed anymore. A cheap-labor Republican, George Bush won't enforce the employer penalties. He has a new amnesty program. And he vows to "match any willing worker with any willing employer." Hence, the latest stampede at the southern border.
Sounds like the Democrats have an issue. And if Clinton can seriously address the problem in non-racial terms, she could march straight to the White House. Go for it, Hillary.

Right!
That may be true - but look at all the folks in NY that voted for her and, she continues to receive a high degree of support in NY. Also, there are many DIMS (many who think they are very smart and very educated) who will vote for whatever DIM is on the ticket.
Good analysis.
It's an invasion, not good for our economy, not good for our access to health care and incomprehensible especially to loyal legal immigrants.
Whichever party is in power that allows it, deserves to be out.
My first loyalty is to my country. Maybe I'm too old fashioned.
Here here.
I am not a gun owner, but I believe conservatism comes first and foremost.
I'd like W to address our concerns.

This is very interesting. I wish I could read the whole thing, maybe later I'll give it a more energetic try.
But, it does look like the illegals have reached some critical mass, as folks on all sides start to turn against them.
This is good.
We know we can't trust Hillar to do anything about this..but we also know that the Republicans have refused to do anything about it. So we should punish those in power..the Republicans,,Rhinos..including G. Bush. Maybe they will listen the second time around..out of power.
I agree with you. But I am still curious to what she may say or if she will say anything about Fox's racist statement. Imagine, what would have been said if Trent Lott had made this statement.
I'd never vote for her. But, I do like to pretend I am "softening" to her to my liberal aquintances. I love telling them that she'll govern to the right of center and throw them (her base) a few inconsequential bones, now and again.

The Hillary Amendment Subverts Immigration Law
If you still aren't convinced that Hillary Clinton is just posturing with her new immigration rhetoric perhaps you should examine some of the open-border legislation that she has supported:
* Co-sponsored S. 2381, a major amnesty for illegal aliens in 2004* Co-sponsored S. 8 to repeal the federal ban against granting illegal aliens in-state tuition and reward illegal aliens amnesty in 2003-2004.
* Co-sponsored S. 1545, the DREAM Act of 2003 to reward illegal aliens with in-state tuition and amnesty in 2003-2004
* Co-sponsored S. 2444, the Kennedy INS restructuring bill in 2002 that would assist illegal immigration by compromising immigration laws
* Co-sponsored S. 1645, the Agricultural Job Opportunity, Benefits, and Security Act of 2003, an amnesty for agricultural workers.
* Co-sponsored S. 778 a one-year extension of Section 245(i), an immigration provision that allows certain illegal aliens to pay a fine and to get amnesty.
She would hand the keys to the White House to Bin laden.
Inner city blacks always knew that illegals were taking their jobs.
The racism of Fox is no surprise. Hispanics run the gamut from Nordic to black and white Hispanics can be quite racist. Ask any Cuban. And haven't Argentines always called Brazilians "monkeys" ?
Fining employers who hire illegals is such obvious common sense that if you don't propose it you obviously are not serious about the problem.
Hillary can say she's pro-life, pro-defense, in favor of "sealing the borders" (as if the borders were a Tupperware Bowl), pro-business, pro-Terri Schiavo, pro-Conservative Justices on SCOTUS and pro-GWB for that matter and everyone on the Left knows that NONE of it is series. She'll say ANYTHING to get elected. She'll do NOTHING about all of that if, God Forbid, her disproportional butt ends up in the Oval Office.
Any major party candidate who runs on a platform of border security and expelling illegal aliens will succeed in putting together a winning coalition of working class whites and blacks. It will not matter whether that candidate is a Republican, or a Dim, Dr. ("Lucky Pierre") Frist, Hillary!, or some other bozo or bozette. That person will be elected by a clear majority.
Since our guy Jorge appears to be in Vincente's pocket on this issue (does Vincente have compromising photos, or what?), I'd say the handwriting is on the wall.
And those of us who think that illegal immigration and President Bush's continuing refusal to do anything about it is a big deal, are doomed to suffer the fate of Cassandra.
Isn't it a good thing to see the Democratic Party moved to the Right ? Is it a good thing to see the Democratic Party dominated by secularist deviants ? We need a functioning two party system or the free trade open borders globalists in the GOP will rob everyone blind.
In any case this issue hurts GW and the GOP bad, if we don't address it soon, it won't matter, the culture will be gone anyway and the Socialist/Communist Dems will be in permanent power.
Oh well....reminds me of the Better Red than Dead 60's attitude.
3.5 million people will very easily flip on this issue i wont vote for hillary but i will vote 3rd party i will not vote for another pubbie until they get out of pocket of industry leaders that hire illegal immigrants PERIOD. and i'm willing to bet theres alot more like me
I agree with both of you.
And, FWIW, I know military people from NY state who support Hillary and think she's been good for, and supportive of, the military people there.
I can't make heads or tails out of what you wrote.
