Toeing the Borderline By Craig Crawford, CQ Columnist Immigration is the next big thing in political hot buttons, but who wins and who loses? Both parties are divided within their own ranks on how to position themselves for maximum advantage on an issue that is rising quickly toward the social and political surface. Both sides agree it could be a deciding factor in many races in next years midterm election.

It is the strongest issue out there for the blue-collar white males, says Dave Mudcat Saunders, a Virginia-based Democratic consultant who is co-author of an upcoming book, Foxes in the Henhouse, which will suggest ways his party can win back rural voters on issues such as illegal immigration.
With Republicans torn by Bushs moderate stance, Democrats could find fertile hunting ground in Sun Belt states by moving to the right on immigration.
Saunders says the Democrats will need to fine-tune their rhetoric to get that message across.
Bubba doesnt call them illegal immigrants, the political operative noted. He calls them illegal aliens. If the Democrats put illegal aliens in their bait can, were going to come home with a bunch of white males in the boat.

In other words "Let's slap some more lipstick on that hog and the ignert hillbillies will want to take it to the prom". Well good luck with that.
Unfortunately they are not trust worthy on this or any other issue. It is their own great white whale, Ted Kennedy who largely made the immigration mess we have today.
Yeah, the RATS will need some action to go along with their get tough rhetoric.
But lets not forget that only two weeks ago, the 44 Democrats in the Senate voted unanimously to add money for 500 new Border Patrol Agents, 200 new Interior Enforcement ICE Agents and 1900 additional detention beds for deportees to the Iraq War Supplemental Funding Bill.
34 Republican Senators voted against this badly needed expansion of our immigration law enforcement capability. Open border votes like that could badly damage the Republicans.
Craig Crawford is on the payroll of the Dimocrat National Committee isn't he?
Nope: he's a MSNBC/CBS commentator, Congressional Quarterly columnist & author of the soon to be released book, "Attack The Messenger"

They left Oaxaca. They don't want if following them here. They want good jobs and to rise in America, not to avenge Santa Anna.
Among Blacks and Hispanics we see that opinion among the leadership is starkly at variance with mass opinion. Jesse Jackson was trying to make excuses for Fox because he thinks there is some Rainbow Coalition between Blacks and Hispanics on the left. There isn't. Jackson's notion was that a left ethnic alliance could be created with Hispanics playing the Blacks and Blacks playing the Jews. Didn't work. Hispanics and Blacks have no ethnic interests in common and in the turf wars of urban politics they are major rivals.
I don't think anyone has figured out how to connect with the voters on this one. So-called experts come on c-span and calllers from both parties scream at them. There is a disconnect between the theoretical and the actual. McCain, this morning, defended his bill which most will find incomplete, I think.
The voters are very, very clear on what they want.
They want the borders secure. Working class voters are quite clear about not wanting to compete with the third world. The stances are there. It is just that the corporate wing of both parties has the money.
Populists vs corporatists.
"Populists vs corporatists."
Politics is always the lesser of two evils, I guess.
